How much ram should a turned-on but unused Ultimate Edition 2.6 use?

Postby Lynwood » Sat May 25, 2013 4:36 pm

Hello, all,

I'm using 2.6 (don't know if it's -.5) on an older system w/ an Intel dual-core 2.4 GHz processor and two gigs of DDR2 ram. I find that i'm using about 38% of that ram, or nearly a gig, even when I have no program up. I normally use the Gnome DE. Is that normal? If this is normal, what is using so much ram?

I plan to upgrade to 3.5 as soon as possible but am stuck where I am for now.

Regards,
Ray

Well, if you open a terminal an run Htop you can find out what is using the most ram. (You may need to install it) If you click on MEM% near the top it will filter showing the most ram usage first.

Ultimate Edition tends to use lots of ram. It is eyecandy. But it can be reduced. Background services can be turned of for example. I would not switch to 3.5. It has KDE with uses LOTS of ram. How much swap is enabled?

Ultimate Edition 2.6 is based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS which is still being supported.
And yes Ultimate Edition 3.5 will be very heavy on your system. I would not recommend it.
You can try Ultimate Edition 3.4 Lite, it consumes less resources and is based on 12.04 LTS.

ALso try using a lighter desktop like LXDE or XFCE, it will make a huge difference.

I like to run conky which gives me a lot of info including what is using resources. In 2.6.X you enter the terminal and type "conky" you can exit once it's going, terminal will complain but go ahead.
