Battery usage reduces more in Linux

Battery usage reduces more in Linux

Postby Srinivasan » Sat May 15, 2010 5:31 am

When compared to Windows Linux requires more power to run.

In Windows XP i can work for 3hrs with less CPU and hdd usage.

While doing the same kind of process in Linux i get less than 2hrs  . Also for getting 2.5hrs I've to set visual effects to none. I've set power usage as on-demand so most of the time my processor speed reduces to 800Mhz from 2.1GHz.

Is there any way to increase the work time while using battery.

Set the power usage to Powersave instead of on-demand.
If using an external mouse use one with the roller ball instead of an optical one.
dim the display a little if it's not already

Go to System > Administration > Startup Applications
and disable things you're not using like
bluetooth manager
evolution notifier
iTalc
Gnome Do
Remote desktop
Ubuntu one
visual assistance
wicd NM Tray
xfce volume daemon
yarssr

That's all I have right now.

Linux has always been more power hungry....per say.It doesn't have the same power saving apps that M$ has. Some times drivers aren't made well, and eat a lot of power also....try to use the open source drivers as much as possible,or vise versa.

I did all except startup apps customization.

If we have an app or script which would automatically end unwanted processes(As per user config) while discharging, would be much helpful

Linux has always been more power hungry
In my laptop I've not installed any drivers, does the drivers that comes with the distro is open source and is it the best of all :?:
