Why not restricted codecs?

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.6

Why not restricted codecs?

Postby chipps » Wed May 12, 2010 10:04 pm

Installed 2.6 last Saturday on a triple boot out of pure curiosity, and have got to say, I just may be sticking with this one. Awesome job. Gotta ask though - when you include everything including the kitchen sink with this distro, why not blow it the rest of the way over the top and include the nonfree codecs for your garden variety DVD viewing while you're at it? Granted its no big deal to install them, just seems nutty when literally everything else and then some is already there.

That's it, carry on.

Thanks for the "tip of your hat" chipps ! <BREW> You see The words non-Free and restricted are licensing red tape ! It is ok for you the end user to install these options (some of these options come with an agreement that only YOU (The end user) can accept ) these options may not be distributed by a distro developer ! and the developer can not accept the agreement for you (the end user !) so to keep from having to pay licensing infringement penalties, not to mention lawyer fee's we'll just let you (The end user) do the do'n ! ;) Yes I know they are there for everyone to download but , you must understand it is the things that don't make sense that makes the world go round ! ;) Once again thank for hopping on board ! hope to here from you again ! If you should have any issues , know we are here to lend a hand !! ;)

Hey you're welcome and I'm sure you'll hear from me again - even if it's wrong... and probably will be!

I come from Linux Mint 8, been running that for 6 months or so as my main distro, but hit 2.6 here and was pretty much blown away at how much smoother it went in than Mint 9's RC did, and all them bells and whistles!! I only asked because Mint does include said codecs as part of the distro by default, which was one of it's main attractions to me as a Linux oldie but newbie (my last attempt at Linux prior to this year dates back to Slackware 3.0, so lets not go there), and Mint doesn't have anywhere near the amount of goodies Ultimate Edition does otherwise... so I just had to ask.

At the moment I'm triple booting Vista, Mint 8 Gnome, and Ultimate Edition 2.6... but since last Saturday haven't been much of anywhere else except Ultimate Edition. More than anything else I'm impressed with how freaking FAST this is even with all of the eye candy turned on - and I'm only on a 3 or 4 year old Toshiba Satellite A205 laptop with 2GB ram and Intel graphics... not exactly high end equipment. But it flies, and everything works.

So cheers... <BREW> ... and I'll stick my nose in occasionally until it gets bitten off. Laters...

ALSO ! Ultimate Edition is based on Ubuntu but should not be confused with or be considered Ubuntu. The major difference between the two is that Ultimate Edition has its own repository that contains restricted multimedia drivers as well as packages that require license acceptance to install.
Found here ! http://www.ultimateeditionoz.com/forum/ ... 156&t=1137 Thanks Blackwolf ! <BREW>

lol that's not me.I prefer letting my head "breath".The only solution was to encase everything I own in foil :D .

Actually the pics are from a practicle joke a group did on a "friend".They cover every single thing in the apartment in foil....except a picture of his girlfriend, and a book titled "practicle jokes" by Pen,and Teller.<I think that's how you spell his name.
