Rebuild grub via live disk.

Not fun, hope to god the partition table is intact.

Re: Software issues post here please. SOLVED

Postby deviltalk » Mon Feb 14, 2011 7:00 pm

SOLVED!

ok using the usb key i have with the iso for Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 boot up.
i found my solution with google, on canoacles database. (cant spell.)
followed the instructions and reboot.

worked perfectly. (except for the other boo boo)
i picked the wrong linux as my boot, when installing the last installed OS controls the GRUB and i selected the previous install. oops. now i had listed doubles of everything, so i took out the doubles, with out figuring what doubles worked, so now i do not have access to the boot partition copy of linux, my fix is i am going to use terminal, edit the .gconf files responsible for the boot and restart.

its easier then it looks. and for those just tuning in here is the quick dirty.
160g harddisk
partitioned
4 g boot for lg restore
30g windows XP os 7.2 g used (c: drive)
60g data partition (d: drive) also windows
50g (approx) multi partition linux 24g for OZ unity 1.0, 23g Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 both have about 2g swap each.

now c: drive has loads of extra space so i want to move 10g to linux, i know you cant move space from the start of a drive to the end, so i will do it in sections, c: to d:.

Partition Magic, i have the last updated version before Easus stopped availibility. (best partition program ever.)
i used this to build space for linux, while maintaining my data.
steps to do
close page files. delete temp folders of crap.
defrag the crap out of c: and d: drives.
run partition magic.
move 10g from c: to "unallocated space" then to d: ## i figured best way to do first move.
worked except when rebooted gave me the grub prompt> i thought crap. posted my "help me" started immediatly on google looking for a solution on my pc. found solution using google, fixed grub, it boots into wrong partition(as i put in the wrong sda5 was supposed to be sda6. ok rebuild .gconf using grub config shows me doubles not in each catagories, but additional catagories that hold the doubles. ok, take out one set of doubles. (wrong doubles) now i have no access the the boot partition, so i am going through shell to fix, as when i set up my linux distros, i made sure they were identical ie; computers name, primary login and sudo passwords.
easy peasy. will continue to update and link weppage used to repair grub2 config.

ok page i used is here, now if you are going to repartition write down your drive you boot from if you are a single drive user it will be sd0 sda hd0, or hda then the drive for your grub.cfg will be (just example) hda5
write down your drives and use the guide with your live/cd or usb key to re-config the grub/2 bootloader.

now i had problems getting this back it kept saying it was broken, had to google it and grab from a page 3, backtrack to page 1, its worth the look see.

Just installed 2.6.1...going back from 2.9.....2.6.1 seems to be more slick and works faster............

My problem : Update Manager stops mid-way and shows this error...

"Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct."

Thanks in advance..

And sorry if this is a repeated query...just couldn't search a similar issue..

Yeah...It worked...Thanks...

One more issue here...Visual effects is set to 'none' at every boot-up though i set it to 'extra'...

What should i be doing to let it remain with 'extra'....

If home folder is encrypted

Decrypt home folder, make changes.

Then restart

I need to enable the 'extra' option in visual effects every time i boot up...

After that it's fine.....But i needed a solution to let it remain with that option not
forcing me to enable it each time...
