Still no wireless.

That's because it's blocked. If there's a switch on it play with it some. I think on the acer it may be the F2 key but I don't have one to find out. I'll see what else I can find.

At least it's not blocked now, so it's a matter of getting it working properly. This may help since it's the same ar5001 card.

The ar5001 is a tough card to get working right. It seems that pretty much everything has been thrown at it with limited success. What works for one doesn't work for others as you can see by searching for ar5001 here: http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php

The thread I linked to has some of the better attempts at getting it to work. Hopefully someone here has some info. that I haven't already been thru. :(
Might be worth giving the windows wireless driver a shot in the thread I linked to.

Broadcom B43 wireless driver issue

Postby mng519 » Tue Jun 01, 2010 9:05 pm

I noticed that on the Ultimate 2.6 install dvd, when you boot from it and use it as a live cd, the Broadcom B43 Wireless driver is in the Hardware Drivers list.

Then after I install the os from the disk onto my hdd it is no longer in the list. Only the Broadcom STA driver is in the list. The B43 driver is better for my card though. How do i get it to show back up in the list? I tried googling this, but so far haven't found a fix that works. Thanks for any help in advance.

PPL not so fast here please.

If you try to install the package in synaptic then you will get this error about the tools needed.
But if you will download the tools for the broadcom 43xx the you want to install it,
well this will be the same issue like with the Ubuntu Tweak = it will Delete Half of your system (U.E)
And will live you in the end with Ubuntu Desktop!!!
Yes at this point the tools for broadcom + the source will do the same process like the Ubuntu workaround
To Delete any packages that is not there Distro.
So this is A warning for you at this point of time with the broadcom 43xx.
Any way you will get the Crash when you will try to install the “bcmwl-kernel-source”.

Hello mng519.

You have the option to use OR the wireless OR the LAN (wire) option.
I can use the wireless but not the eth 0.
So try to work with the option that you can get to work.
If you have the same issue just get the wireless to work for you. ;)

Well thanks for the help. Just out of curiosity, do you think Ultimate will ever get to the point that knoppix or kanotix has with everything being able to work out of the box? Unless it just happens to be that my hardware is one of the chosen few, while others haven't had such an experience.

It's just that immediately with those distros everything works, wireless, graphics card, compiz fusion is all up and running without a hitch, I thought that was pretty impressive, and was just wondering why other linux flavors haven't done the same. Anyway, thanks again.
