Well I am just using one monitor on VGA. I found those settings, but the highest resolution in the list is 1024x748 and when I try manually adding the right resolution, I lose part of the screen and the resolution is worse.

If you are just using a Monitor, most Monitors have controls on them to adjust Horizontal and Vertical size. Many monitors have Memory and they will Remember to reset the Size of the Display every time you change the Resolution. I still have several 20" Analog Monitors. I never use a Resolution larger than 1280x1024, however, these Monitors can handle higher Resolutions.

Do you know what the maximum Resolution your Monitor can handle?
Is it an LDC Display and if so, what size?

It's highest resolution is 1280x1024. I would speculate, for the lack of a ruler, that it is 19" or 20" lcd screen.

About that memory thing, is it possible to burn out or something? The reason I ask is windows and every linux flavor I have tried with it (monitor, not the tower) could tell me it was a VA721. Last week, when I powered on, the bios was shifted so I have a black bar on the left, and windows was in 1024x768. I fixed the resolution, but it no longer tells me the name of my monitor, it is now unknown.

Windows usually detects the device that is connected to the video card whether it is my Sony HDTV or my Mitsubishi monitor.

You never said what type of monitor you have. Is it an LCD Flat Panel monitor? These types of monitors have both VGA connectors and DVI connectors on the back of the monitor. At any rate, when connected to the PC, Display Properties usually has a Monitor section where it displays the model of Monitor you have. I believe that the Nvidia Control Panel also displays that.

It is an LCD flat panel, though it only has a VGA connection. Thats what I am saying, is that windows is no longer detecting the device, and the Nvidia control panel (in Ultimate Edition) could not either. My settings where already in place in windows when my monitor went bonkers last week, but the new Ultimate Edition install can't seem to pick anything up about the monitor.

Sorry for the double post, but maybe somebody can help me with a related problem?

I still cannot install the driver, more specifically I cannot get it to load the PPA driver, it just keeps loading the one that came installed.
The one in hardware drivers works fine, except my max resolution, by xrandr, is not large enough.

However, back to the driver that came installed. Using xrandr, I was able to add the correct resolution and then enable it. Videos look like garbage and no desktop effects, but a resolution that doesn't hurt my eyes. On reboot, I am back at my old resolution. How do I make it keep the resolution I added with xrandr?

Without the correct Restricted Driver, you can get the Resolution, but cannot get good quality on videos and Google Earth will refuse to run, as an example.

Have you looked at the link I posted, in a previous reply, with many pages discussing Installing Nvidia Drivers? Have you entered nomodeset in the Grub Menu for the Kernel you are loading. It can also be entered each time you boot using the correct F key to bring up the menu.
