where to place older version Ultimate Edition wav files for UE-2.5 login

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.5

where to place older version Ultimate Edition wav files for UE-2.5 login

Postby marvinudy » Fri Apr 16, 2010 9:05 pm

I recently started converting a friend to Linux by installing an earlier version of Ultimate Edition and now want to upgrade him to UE-2.5. He is enthralled with the female voice of the "login" wav and "systems operational" wav and would like me to modify the UE-2.5 login sequence to include the above mentioned wav files. I know where the wav files are located but need some direction on where to place them for execution during login into UE-2.5.

best regards,

<BREW> Glad to oblige open a terminal "sudo nautilus" navigate file system > usr> share > sounds place the new (untared) Ultimate 2.5 sounds folder in sounds (Replace). :D For login ready open sounds > ubuntu > stereo and place the new system-ready.ogg in the ubuntu stereo folder (It will replace the excising symbolic link) open system > preferances > sounds and be sure the sounds are set to 2.5, logout and back in you should be good to go ! <BREW>
Be sure to check permissions on both files ! ;)

JOHNNYG ,

Thanks for prompt input. But I'm suffering from some sort of brain f**t because it's late and time for the ole boy to turn in.

What want to do is to modify whatever script or menu and select specific wav or ogg files for each step in the boot process. Currently on my machine I have the "ugly" UBUNTU (personal opinion) wav file that plays after log-in and really want to change it. I apologize for not making this clear the first time.

I did download your sound file.

best regards,

Fixed: UE-2.5 login boot sounds in UE-2.3

Postby marvinudy » Sat Apr 17, 2010 12:05 am

JOHNNYG,

OK, my machine problem is fixed. I forgot to 'fix' the permissions for the new sound file folder entry. Stupid rookie mistake but it is late and I'm tired. Will fix friends machine next week.

Thanks for sticking with me and good night.

There is only two places for your start sounds ====> Login is linked to the ubuntu sounds folder place any sound you want at log in in the ubuntu sounds stereo folder name your new sound "system-ready" this sound must be in "ogg" formate if your new sound is a .wav file or other formate you can use Audacity to save it(convert) to an "ogg" file, After successful login or ( unsuccessful login ) is when your 2.5 sounds kicks in and "desktop-login.wav" fires up, If you just want the "voice" "system activated,- all systems operational,- then the wherli sound " I might have that sequence if you like that better, ! as far as scripting the sounds goes this something you would have write, and I couldnt tell you where or how to do this ! I do know you would have to mess with the boot script ! you have to ask your self is it worth it ? Ultimate Edition 2.6 will be out in just a few short weeks And it is "Lucid" based, very fast! and if your friend likes Ultimate Edition 2.5 he will LUV Ultimate Edition 2.6 !

JOHNNYG ,

Thanks for the follow-up. Here is where things stand now. I expanded your sound tar ball and replaced the 'standard' "stereo" folder in /usr/share/sounds/ubuntu with the new 'stereo' folder still in the wav format.
This gives me the "full enchilada" of all boot sounds in sequence on boot-up.

Editing of scripts is beyond my grasp, so I'll take your advice and just wait for UE-2.6 for my friends upgrade.

best regards,

JOHNNYG,

All is well and everything sounds great on boot-up and the 'systems-ready.ogg' works fine. Last evening I made a simple project difficult. With all your suggested adjustments the audio boot stream is clear and mellow and I'm sure my newly converted Linux friend will be pleased.

SoundKonverter converted the wav into ogg files with no problem.

I may be old and slow but I'm tenacious.

Thanks again for your help and input.
