Can you (gently) explain how to donwload/install GDM2.2. ? I am new to linux and I just installed UE2.5.
Thanks,
C.
Here is the terminal code to install gdm2.20 you may also be able to install through synaptic package manager If you have all your repositories are open and you have updated your system, ether way it should work, If you should decide you want to do this don't freak out if when you restart you get an error saying you are running in low graphics mode, just click "OK" and let it start once you are in your desktop, goto system>Administration>Login window and set to your liking, I don't know how "new" you are or if you have ever used Another Ultimate or Ubuntu flavor, there are some things that have to be set up to get the full operation of gdm2.20, but for the most part you will now have you customizable gdm installed, If you should find you dont want gdm2.20 just follow the instructions on how to remove gdm2.20, at that point there are ways to customize your xsplash and login,http://forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4390, Hope this helps!
if you should have any questions or issues don't hesitate to ask for guidance

PLEASE READ BEFORE PROCEEDING !
DISCLAIMER :
There is a good chance unless you are an advanced user you may tear up your installation of Ubuntu / Ultimate Edition 2.4+ and require re-installation. I take no responsibility should this happen. Personally, I DO NOT suggest you do this on any production system.
BACK UP YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS AND HOME FOLDER !!
THIS SCRIPT IS EXPERIMENTAL !
Open a terminal. Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal
Copy and paste the following: (The whole script after "select all")
I created a file called weenie.sh (this is what I thought I was going to get)
paste the following:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install gdm-2.20
cd /etc/gdm
sudo sed 's|X11R6/||' gdm.conf >/tmp/gdm.conf
sudo mv /tmp/gdm.conf .type "y" when prompted in terminal do you wish to proceed
select gdm-2.20 at the selection screen
after it finishes close all open windows and shut down computer, and re-start
after reaching the desktop you will find a long lost and greatly missed tool:
Go to System>Administration>login window !
You should now have your GDM and login sounds back !
NOTE: you will no longer have the xsplash
I have run this script several times and had no issue
A big thanks to TheeMahn for this !!
To uninstall - Go to synaptic and type in search " gdm " install gdm
this will remove GDM 2.20 and give back xsplash
