Mounting Problem?

Postby gftd » Thu Jan 07, 2010 6:14 pm

During bootup, the following messages appear: "One or more of the mounts listed in /etc/fstab/ cannot yet be moounted. ESC for recovery shell; SWAP: waiting for UUID=f50ec5db-f7a5-484c-94d3-66ab70c26155." With the exception of a few times, bootup continued and the desktop came up ok.

During those exceptions there was a black screen with a blinking cursor in the upper left-hand corner. When I chose to hit the ESC key, I could get to the terminal in recovery mode, but I didn't know what to do next. Most of the time I'd walk away from the keyboard and make a sandwich. Several times I just kept rebooting--there didn't seem to be any other choice--and eventually, by some automagic process I continue to marvel at but in no way understand, the desktop came up and happiness ensued.

Here's the contents of the fstab file:
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
# Entry for /dev/sda3 :
UUID=90400e97-1e1a-43b3-b2e2-044266e62629 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
# Entry for /dev/sda4 :
UUID=28b567ed-1fd2-49f6-924e-51a3ed99717c /home ext4 defaults 0 2
# Entry for /dev/ !! UNKNOW DEVICE !! :
UUID=f50ec5db-f7a5-484c-94d3-66ab70c26155 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/scd0 /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto,exec,utf8 0 0

So, my swap partition is unknown? What's the next step?

Thanks,
gftd

Try booting to rescue mode then command shell and sudo fsck
This will force a file system check, see if that clears it up
also by installing some alternative applications in your " tweaking " of Ultimate Edition, You may run into some issues, As Ultimate Edition is not Ubuntu proper, And runs some of its own codes,These after market apps may work with Ubuntu 9.10 and may not with Ultimate Edition. As we always say, "Backup your data" so if you "break" your system you will have what you had on your next install! ;)

Hi gftd,
I'm gonna take a 'stab' in the dark here but have you by any chance (on purpose or accidentally) created your swap partition on the NAS drive in your signature? Could your boot problem be your system waiting for the NAS to come online?
Also, just for giggles, edit your fstab file and put a # infront of UUID=f50ec5db-f7a5-484c-94d3-66ab70c26155 none swap sw 0 0
This will cause your system to ignore the line and hopefully proceed normally to boot. Once there, see which drive is no longer mounted and that should be your culprit. You can always reverse this by removing the # again.

Good luck.

No, it would never have occurred to me to do that. Am I missing something? :mrgreen:

Also, just for giggles, edit your fstab file and put a # infront of UUID=f50ec5db-f7a5-484c-94d3-66ab70c26155 none swap sw 0 0. This will cause your system to ignore the line and hopefully proceed normally to boot. Once there, see which drive is no longer mounted and that should be your culprit

Great suggestion. Booting now proceeds without any errors and all drives are mounted, so that's a good thing. Does this mean that there's something wrong with the swap configuration itself? FWIW, swap is in a separate partition and I think I set it up correctly. Nevertheless, I've been futzing around like crazy here--occasionally from knowledge, but often not, so anything is possible. How do I check?

Also, I remember seeing various online discussions about setting up swapfile(s)? instead of using a separate partition. Any thoughts on that?

Thanks,
gftd
