I have a few questions for an uninstall of UU2.5

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.5

I have a few questions for an uninstall of UU2.5

Postby marty6 » Tue Dec 29, 2009 3:32 pm

Hi,

I have a question about uninstalling UU2.5 off of a drive. What would be the easiest / safest way to uninstall 2.5? I currently have the following drives w/ OSs.

Hdd 1 - Vista 64 bit (yes, I know)
Hdd 2 - UU2.2 64 bit (works great)
Hdd 3 - UU2.5 64 bit (basic setup)

The grub bootloader from 2.5 (I think is on drive 1 w/ the Vista OS). I currently have a triple boot. I can select to go into any of the three drives. If I decide to get rid of the UU2.5 off of Hdd 3, what would be the best way to do so, and can I have my old boot grub from 2.2 back?

I forgot to create a /home partition when I installed UU2.5. I would like to go back and reinstall 2.5 w/ the /home partition. I really like the UU2.5. I didn't get sound to work yet, but that is a separate issue.

Once I get UU2.5 up and running, I would like to try to mimic what's on 2.2 and have it on 2.5. Is there a way to create a list of what's on 2.2, send it to 2.5 and update / install those programs?
Thanks,
marty6

computer setup
Asus P3Q5 Dlx
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 3ghz
8 gigs corsair xms

Edited:
Would it behove me to do the following after reading up on other linux forums:
1) delete UU2.5 via Windows Vista ( I did not use wubi btw)
or
2) reformat the drive w/ UU2.5

then

3) use the windows vista cd to fix the mbr -- bootrec.exe/fixboot , then bootrec.exe/fixmbr
4) Reboot to see if the mbr is fixed
5) use the UU2.2 cd to reinstall the grub

marty6,
I read your post, and the steps you gave in your "edit" would work to remove/re-install Ultimate Edition 2.5 - but... why bother with all that, if you're gonna re-install UE2.5 anyway?
Just reboot the UE2.5 install DVD (or whatever media you used) and reinstall Ultimate Edition 2.5 as you'd like it to be. Just delete the existing Ultimate Edition partitions in the partitioner, re-define as you prefer, and continue with the install.
Once you've got Ultimate Edition 2.5 re-installed and done your basic "post install" tasks and rebooted 2.5 at least a couple of times, then reboot and select UE2.2 from the Grub menu. Once in UE2.2, open System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager, click on File>Save Markings As and select a file name and destination you can acceess from Ultimate Edition 2.5 and save the file. You may also backup your email and any other data files you'd like to have in UE2.5 and save them to the same destinaion as the Synaptics file.
Now, re-boot into UE2.5, open Synaptic, select File>Read Markings - this will select all your installed programs from 2.2, and allow you to install in 2.5. Any backup Data files you saved ( such as your email backup) can also be restored to UE2.5 or to the appropriate app in UE2.5..

TexasMike,

I'll follow this method first. It seems to be a better approach to reinstall 2.5. I'll post back tomorrow once I get home from my vacation. Thank you for your time and help!

TexasMike,

Happy New Year! I have reinstalled 2.5 and created the partions that I needed. Upon reading the information that you have written, I do have a question for you. If I go to synaptic package manager, file>save Markings ... will I also need to do the 'save full state' as well? Also, should I copy over the archived files in var\cache\apt\archives (the *.deb files) in 2.2 to the same location as in 2.5. And, what problems could I run into if the apps being loaded are 1) already on 2.5 and are newer versions and 2) should I update or use the '3rd party software' entries in the 'repositories' of synaptic package manager?

marty6,
The link I gave you - http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how%20to-reinstall-all-of-currently-installed-packages-in-fresh-ubuntu-install.html - says you should select or check the Save full state.. option. This is so that you get all the installed packages and not just the ones that have "changed" since the original OS installation. I am not sure if you should also save the /var/cache/apt/archives, but to be "safe and thorough", I would save that folder to a safe place - another internal drive, external USB drive, or whatever - and use it ONLY if you find it necessary. I suspect that you will find that is only a "cache" folder, the contents of which change with installations and removals of packages, so is probably is not necessary/needed to getting things re-installed. I have never saved this directory/file combo and have never missed it on a new installation or re-install, but your "mileage" may vary.... ;)
As to the "Third Party software" Repo entries, I would check the file /etc/apt/sources.list for the Repos you need, and add them if they are not already there. Remember that you need to use sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list to change this file (you need root privileges to save any changes to this file).
I think that will get you where you want to be with the new install of Ultimate Edition 2.5. Keep us posted on your progress and let us know if there are any problems you cannot resolve. We all are here to help each other and learn... ;) 8-)

Postby marty6 » Thu Jan 07, 2010 8:31 am

TexasMIke,

I ran into a problem with the install of some of those prog that I had on 2.2. I have to delete 2.5 and start over again. I ran into a serious issue with a prog that was running and I kept getting an error with it. When I 'deleted' it, a serious issue came up and I could not open any programs or shutdown....basically, nothing worked. So, this weekend, i'll reinstall and start over with it. I'll look for the error first when I boot up and post about it before I do any deleting of 2.5.

marty6,
I would be great if you could give the actual error text or at least a good description of the error. Sorry to hear you're having a problem. :(
Some programs you may have installed may be sort of "version specific" - meaning there may be a version made for various Linux versions/distros. Could you please specify just what program gave you so much grief...?? Once I know just which program you had a problem with I can check if there is a version specific to the UBUNTU version that Ultimate Edition 2.5 is based upon... ;) BTW: whenever possible, use Synaptic to remove an offending/misbehaving program so as to get all it's dependencies and other variables backed out or uninstalled.
I'll watch for your next post....

TexasMike,

I'm not quite there yet. I've tweaked UU2.5 alittle. This installation is still in its basic stage. Pretty nice however. I was wondering about the Pulseaudio sound. Is there a simple way to get this to work? Believe me ... still a beginner on this. I really still don't know how I got sound to work in the first place with UU2.2.

Thank you,
