Here are old installation step i posted in the Ultimate Edition 2.3 thread. You can use it as a guide, but please replace the following lines that suites your driver.

If you trying to install Nvidia drivers that you've downloaded from the NVidia site, please follow the guided info provided below;

First thing first, your going to download the driver from nvidia site then and save it to your desktop, then log out of the system. When your at the login screen, hold "Ctrl + Alt + F2" to bring up console/text mode. Login as root user. Type "cd Desktop" then hit enter, then "sudo killall gdm" then press enter, then "sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run" or "sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run" for x64 driver. Follow the on screen information to complete the installation!!

Please replace the driver name/lines with yours as i just used those for example!!

Then something is goofy with your system...Ubuntu recommends the service stop command in karmic now to kill x.

Are you not running Gnome?

Hello Joker.

Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1, then login and type
Code: Select all
sudo killall gdm
. That should be enough. When you want to login back to Gnome, type
Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm
or
Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start
