but gnome just keeps restarting.
How would i kill server x?

If you trying to install Nvidia drivers that you've downloaded from the NVidia site, please follow the guided info provided below;
First thing first, your going to download the driver from nvidia site then and save it to your desktop, then log out of the system. When your at the login screen, hold "Ctrl + Alt + F2" to bring up console/text mode. Login as root user. Type "cd Desktop" then hit enter, then "sudo killall gdm" then press enter, then "sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-185.18.14-pkg1.run" or "sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-185.18.14-pkg2.run" for x64 driver. Follow the on screen information to complete the installation!!
