joker...i had the same problem too...
but things work as said before a bit different....in 2.5
press cntrl+alt+f2...login..and then type sudo killall gdm-binary
then go to desktop and then type the sudo sh Nvidia.run(its a long name though)!!!!
thats it...u'll install...the nvidia kernel..aloow it to install nvidia 32 bit open gl libraries...mostly the sys crashes the he GPU cos of the 32 bit open gl non compatibility,,,(i may be wrong here but thats wad i inferred)
lastly...if u wanna kill the xserver...follow the previous replies....
