Can't install and livedCD won't boot all the way...

Here is what the LiveCD says when it finishes the boot process, even in safe graphics mode. Incidentally, I am trying to install 2.5 because my previous latest release (whatever the stupid name is) started giving me the very same error message and was unable to "startx" after upgrading MPlayer. The Mplayer upgrade included some Nvidia driver packages ( I have a 6600GT) and the problem seemed to center around libdvpau-195. Anyway, same error message. This 2.5 liveCD and that upgraded installation broke x in the same way.

help?

Here are the last few lines of the boot screen:

*starting kernel log daemon...
*starting MySQL database server mysqld
*Running DKMS auto installation service for kernel 2.6.31-15-generic
* nvidia (185.18.36)
... done.
* starting Commun Unix Printing System: cupsd
* PulseAudio configured for per-user sessions

Ubuntu 9.10 ubuntu tty1

ubuntu login: _ (it booted into the graphical screen before...)

- after I login and "startx" I get:

Many lines about the Xorg server, but these seem to be just information, then
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) No drivers available

Fatal Server error:
no screens found

- I am told that I can check the log file at "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" for additional information. then...

ddxSigGiveUp: Closing log
giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to conect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3) Server Error.

- I can't get any further.
I think that the MPlayer update brought with it a new Nvidia driver that either isn't working or can't be found by the system..

can you help

If you didn't have anything on your local disk that is important, i'll suggest a clean installation an leaving Mplayer updates alone if so be the case you'll have a working system!!

or...you should be able to install the previous drivers through cl,and fix it.

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install "the nvidia driver you need"
