Yes. It ran some updates for xubuntu. And then finished. If i use Ultamatix it shows that the XFCE desktop is installed.
I still think that i had an incomplete download for Ultimate Edition 2.5. My file size was not the same as stated on sourceforge. Wish i could help out more.
Even though i have used linux for some time i am not that skilled with it. Still learning lots of stuff.

Hi dan j,
If you believe you may have an incomplete download then we NEED to do a few things here otherwise you will have issues continually that will not be resolved and give you the wrong impression of Ultimate Edition 2.5. First thing I found strange was that you did not have XFCE from the start (I did.). I wonder what else may be missing?
Checking the file size is not the best way to check your download. Have you checked the MD5Sum of your downloaded .iso ? Do you know how to?

Let us know how you go.

The op isnt alone. I have the exact same problem (among other issues). Ran apt-get install xubuntu-desktop. It said "already installed...package xubuntu-desktop set to". Then i tried to purge it. It removed packages "xubuntu-desktop, xpdf and 2 othes packages that i cant remember at the moment. Freeing up less than 5mb of space. I then tried to reinstall it. I pulled those same packages back in. Still no option to log into xfce. I used torrent. Ran the command md5sum on the iso and it matched. My size is only 3.0GB not 3.1 or whatever the main page says. Im using AMD64 with a usb key as my install source as opposed to cd/dvd.During the install devicekit?-disk did crash but the install did finish and can boot. Off topic but i have over 500mb ram used on a fresh into gnome as reported by gnome-system-monitor as well as top (fresh install). This is abnormal high. Even with no movie loaded mplayer crashes with " bad use of ram/fpu/cpu".

I do not notice any other problems with Ultimate Edition 2.5. I installed Afterstep and it works fine. Going along with what drama said, the XFCE download was very small. Ultamatix says it is installed but is does not show up at login.
Not really sure how to check the MD5. But will look into tomorrow.

You can go to the "software center" and search an download a application call "gtkhash", you can use it to calculate your iso hashes!!

There are various "gui-based" hash checking utilities but i usually use md5sum from the command line.

Jus cd into the directory where the file is. If its in your downloads folder you would do

Code: Select all
cd /home/USER/Downloads

then check the hash

Code: Select all
md5sum NAME-OF-FILE

This could take along time depending on file size and the speed of your comp.

Then just compare that with the md5sum of the original file (this is usually given on the download page).

Release Name: Ultimate Edition 2.5
Architecture: x64
MD5SUM: 72699b8b11c7ebe8ce6e7e5071269079

Release Name: Ultimate Edition 2.5
Architecture: x86
MD5SUM: cf13b6229a2094658c64cf815bc606ff

You can also check the documentation if you want to know more about md5sum

Code: Select all
man md5sum

Are you guys running compiz? In karmic its known to have a memory leak causing high mem usage.Or it could be pulse...go figure.Google pulse mem leak, and find the ppa with the fix,or update. The fix might have made its way to the main repo.

If you find pulse eating your mem then try this...and see if your usage returns to normal.

Code: Select all
aptitude remove udev

the bad thing is doing the above code might break auto-mounting external hardware.

...or just do what I do mostly.Get rid of pulse.

isn't Ubuntu just grand.
