At this point in time I've come to the conclusion that you might not be able to run kde 4.3. I am thinking that your problem might be some video issue why your not able to get the kde desktop shell up and running!! What type/brand/module of GPU do you have? Could be that the drivers that are currently into play within the gnome shell are incompatible with kde 4.3 "not sure though"

Hi DarkChild, this computer only has integrated graphics with up to 64MB memory [VIA Tech KM400/KN400/P4M800 S3 UniChrome]

KDE was working fine on UE2.4 . I've had a quick wizz around the forum to try and see what version of KDE was running on UE2.4, but can't seem to find it. And, if I reinstalled UE2.4 would that version of KDE be updated during 'software updates' - meaning would I have to keep a look out KDE updates and not install them?

I understand the obvious that at some point this computer with its older tech will need to be retired from front line duty.

I've been hankering after a new PC for ages :D

OK....so to round off. Is any one able to confirm VIA Tech KM400/KN400/P4M800 S3 UniChrome is too long in the tooth?

I will see what responses to this KDE issues I get here - cheers.

And I will consider another thread in Hardware - Working if anyone wants to help me decide how to build a great Ultimate Edition PC :) ?

How does this sound folk?

Not too sure which version of kde Ultimate Edition 2.4 was running, more than likely it would be 4.3. Ultimate Edition 2.3 was running kde 4.1 or 4.2!!

As for your system, don't remove it from front line duty until it has roll over

Hehehe, when I say retired front line I mean, this PC started life as HP Pavilion. I have really grown out of it. The Bios is pretty much locked by HP, so next to no tweaking there. The graphics are, ummm, very slow! I've maxed out the PATA HDD tray, the single SATA will only recognise drives less than 320gb etc etc. It would make a great jukebox connect up to my stereo or seed box.
