Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.5

KDE login

Postby Chalawah » Fri Dec 11, 2009 9:27 pm

Hi,

I have carried out a full clean install of UE2.5 [after really enjoying UE2.4]. D/l the 2.5 iso, checked the MD5sum > all ok and installed etc.

I can boot up and log in to Gnome without any problems. However, when I boot up to login screen, enter my user name and password, then select KDE and enter, then KDE desktop starts to build then crashes back to the log in screen.

I also noticed that I have two Gnomes listed in the options. Doesn't make any difference which one I choose to use as both login ok to the Gnome desktop and all appears to be functioning.

I tested again by re-d/l another UE2.5 >then MD5sum > total clean install = same issues as above.

I am installing on separate partitions as /boot, /, /home and /swap. All ext4. I have formatted and each install attempt.

Could anyone offer some advise/nudge me in the right direction to try and resolve this issue? [I am still very new to Ultimate Edition/linux but keen to learn so I will prob ask really basic Qs if I cannot understand any suggestions].

Cheers,

Chalawah.

Tell you what then, if you can create/use another use account to try an log in the kde desktop shell to see if you get the same thing, that would be a good point to start!!

Hi, created new test account. Same issue present. KDE desktop starts to build then crashed with no warning message displayed on the desktop. I can view logs in my main user account using the program 'KSystemLog'. Should I be using this s/w to try and view a log?

Can you be a bit more specific...for example,I could cut and paste logs from Sys log, Kernel log, Authentication log, Daemons log, Xorg log. If I did all these I'd prob have to post multi-times due to size!

Cheers, Chalawah.

To make like easier just do the following in a Terminal:

Code: Select all
sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop

Then: Go to you home directory and hold the "Ctrl" key and hit "H" on your keyboard. Doing that will enable you to view the hidden contents of the home directory/folder. Then delete the following:
Code: Select all
/etc/kde4
/home/ilias/.kde/

Then run the following in a Terminal:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
CPU Type: TripleCore AMD Athlon II X3 440, 2982 MHz (15 x 199)
Motherboard: ECS GF8200A (3 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN)

Hi DarkChild, thanks for the assist.

I have successfully 'sudo aptitude remove kubuntu-desktop'.

Weird thing next is, going to my 'Home Folder' and viewing hidden contents, I see no '/etc/kde4' or '/home/ilias/.kde/'

If I go to the folder [with the harddrive icon] - I think this is refered to the as the 'Root Folder' - I can see, 'etc' folder, this contains '/etc/kde4/kdm..............' . If I run nautilus as root I should be able to delete this. Yes, I have now successfully deleted '/etc/kde4'.

I cannot find any folder '/home/ilias/.kde/' at all  So, after this stage I went and 'sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop'.

I will reboot and see what happens and post result back.

Hi there,

And the result is..... same issue. KDE crashes at the same point during the very initial loading of KDE desktop. Gnome is working fine.

Did I miss something in DarkChild's instructions? Which set of logs should I be studying to glean some more info?

Your time and assist valued!

Cheers, Chalawah.
