Ubuntu thinks my screen is bigger then it is LOL HELP !

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.5

Re: Ubuntu thinks my screen is bigger then it is LOL HELP !

Postby ADPdirty » Sat Dec 26, 2009 3:08 pm

its set to wide
Windows didnt seem to have a problem with it ever.
Its funny how driver actually works but wont let me user 1920x1080@60. Yet it runs compiz smooth as it can be and displaying the "ADM unsupported hardware" water mark ok the screen and i cant take it off.
I wouldnt mind to have it as long as i could get 1920x1080@60, but i cant, it can only go up to 1920x1080@30.
I am 100% sure both video card and TV are capable for it because it worked with windows all the time regardless of release, XP Vista or W7.

There must be the way to override refresh rate at 1920x1080 res but tutorials i find online are to hard for me to understand.
They show some "here is config that worked for me" What config ? config of what where do u get it how do u config it :(
So i cant relly look anywhere for this other then starting a new topic and ask for help as if i was a little baby. In a way i am, linux is new to me and i spent years working with Windows but want to switch because i game less and less every day.

You are seeming to to suffer from the winblows withdraws.....You are using linux now!Not one bit of it is like winblows! If your using linux don't mention winblows at all! forget about it!

Its not perfect....just like any other OS.I suggest doing more research on how linux works...for instance gpu drivers.

Not trying to sound like a dick here, but ....Also Any thread regarding 2.4 can be used as reference also.

radeon HD 3870 X2 512MB X2
HDTV Visio Galevia 47" For some reasons ubuntu says its 50", maybe thats why i cant set 1920x1080@60hz, right now only 1920x1080@30hz and u know its ugleeeee !

I found your post (thanks for direct link :? ) According to your post i should use 9.3 but when i tried to install it using terminal with "sh drop file into terminal" didnt work, i had error
Code: Select all
Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version
default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.31-15-generic; make sure that the version is being
correctly set by --iscurrentdistro

As i continue browsing files and folders i noticed that navigation sucks just like new Vista or Windows 7 naviagtion.
1st why linux shows hard drive space as its name ? and i cant even rename it.
2nd left pane just like vista ubuntu has tree view.
My score
Places=5
Information=-5
Tree=5 only because it cant be any better then tree
history=? not sure i never look back
emblems=? does it change file attribute or something ? if ubuntu reinstalled it will go away so why is it even there. To little emblems anyway.
Please look at 1st screenshot and 2nd alternative that would do much better job and u get to have both 8-).

Usually you would use xrandr to set a custom resolution if it isn't present in other apps.

If you go to the system tab,and under hardware drivers does it not list the ati driver to be installed?Another note...Right at this time (Ill probably get slammed for saying this) is not a good time for the ati proprietary driver. It just doesn't work well.

Another thing to look into is that maybe your hdtv is not sending the proper EDID to the driver you have installed...or the driver just doesn't know how to make heads or tails of it.

Code: Select all
sudo get-edid

should tell you if the two are talking....but not necessarily being nice to each other.

The thing is I *would* normally be concerned with the output, but your as far as I know are running the wrong driver...the bit about the water mark.

What driver are you running? The file from the ati web site?Or did you load a driver from the hardware drivers apps?

Another thing that comes to mind is how are you connected to the hdtv?dvi,or hdmi?Is the cable a quality one?

Also I've been chasing a few post's by you,and trying to piece together what hardware you have....is this a laptop?

Ill check in tomorrow.
