can't block porn

Postby alexm0428 » Fri Dec 11, 2009 2:37 pm

Hi.

I have been looking around everywhere and I don't know what to do.

What I want is to block porn even for the root user (Is not my PC. I have to set it up and let the root user to somebody else, but I have to make this "somebody" can't see porn. This person knows how to run a "sudo gedit ....." command therefore change the config files of dansguardian which is the most common solution).

The idea of using openDNS (given here) was the closest because it has its own password to configure it (the root user doesn't have access to it, only me), but it fails because of a dynamic IP, therefore it is needed a script in order to update the current IP address at openDNS at each reboot, and of course you have to write the user and the password in that script; making possible for the root to see it.

I thought in a hardware based solution like a router with web filtering, but it gets to expensive for a migration from XP to Linux.

Any help please.

PD: I know it'd better to just keep the root user to myself, but I can, i have to give all the power to that person.

Dans Guardian works well. I have it on my kids computers and so far they have not been able to break it. It can be customized as much as you want. When my boys go to a site they shouldn't be on it pops up a flash/html page and has me shakign my finger saying" Uh Uh Uh I am going to kick your ass!!!" Problem with that they show there friends and think it is cool.

No, me no.

I know Dansguardian, and as you say It does what it is supposed to do. The thing is that when you can access the config files, you may allow porn sites or allow some of them. And that's why I cannot have Dans: There will be an user with full access to them (the root user).

And about the google search, believe me, I had spend long nights at there. Thanks for your help, but I still looking for a solution

Makes no sense giving someone a root account to work with an then trying to block them out. Maybe someone else will stop by with a better idea/solution. Root is the highest account/permission level in Linux, makes no sense trying to hide/restricting it, because that will be a hard task

Best quick solution is to use your router it should have something like a trusted user page, you set that to block sites, words or locations, and you can tell it to only trust 1 ip address, or the other option is to run through another PC using that as a gaurdian although that can get complicated,

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FolderEncryption

Not sure if it works with karmic, but worth a try...I personally use truecrypt, but in a different application.Might work for yours too.

I don't think you can really keep a person from looking at things on the net that you don't want em to tho...especially if there smart enough to know how to navigate root, and folders. After all you need is a live disk ;)

The router/modem seems to be the best option...but you can try the encrypting thing.
