Ultimate Edition 2.5 as a guest in VirtualBox

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.5

Ultimate Edition 2.5 as a guest in VirtualBox

Postby loukingjr » Thu Dec 10, 2009 12:33 pm

I don't know how many people are trying to run Ultimate Edition as a guest in VirtualBox but, I installed it and it ran fine, then I made the mistake of updating everything Update Manager said I should, then it went to hell, lol. If I try to log out or restart now, I get either garbage on the screen so I can't tell what it's doing or wants. I also can't get the audio to play back at the correct speed because the sampling rate is off apparently, although that seems to be an issue with VB and anything based on ubuntu 9.10. If I just do a shutdown and start over, I can once again see the splash and log in screens.

any thoughts? anyone?

ok hold on... is your problem only the audio (unfixable for the time being) or is it something else?

well, as I stated, once I did the updates including a new kernel, I couldn't just logout or restart without seeing nothing but garbage on the screen. I had to shutdown Ultimate Edition first, and then reboot it from scratch. Then it would display things fine. I really don't think it's a Ultimate Edition problem. I think VirtualBox and any ubuntu 9.10 distros just don't work all that well together. At least the Mac version of VirtualBox. I have had any number of issues with 9.10, not with pre 9.10 ubuntu based distros, and not with 10.04 alphas, so far anyway. I also use Windows guests and a number of other non-Ubuntu based Linux guests without much fuss.

Hello loukingjr.

I will suggest that you try and use VMware or some other virtualization application other than vb as it as lots of issues when trying to run Ultimate Edition/Ubuntu as a guess. Example Video & audio probs, not been able to get proper screen resolution etc "even with the addons been installed"

I am not sure about VMware Fusion as that version is for Mac systems, even though it shouldn't pose a problem. If your running any other linux distro or windows on your machine you can always get the respective versions that should get things running for you!!

And may i ask what kind of issues were you having with Vmware Fusion?

probably the easiest way to find out what issues I was having is to look at the latest changes they did from 3.0 to 3.01... 3.0 for the Mac is a very young version and is plagued with many issues. It's the first virtualization software or the Mac that supports Aero (sorta) in WIndows 7 and for some reason, when 3.0 came out it didn't occur to them to make sure Ubuntu 9.10's ran. Personally, I think virtualization software is a great idea, I mostly use VirtualBox obviously, but, I think they try to do too much emulation that ends up causing problems. None are really like running something natively. But, I would rather have the free problems of VirtualBox than pay for the problems of VMware, and I assume Parallels, although I never tried that myself. It's like WIne, it seems the few things I may want virtualization for are the very things that don't work or aren't supported yet.
