how do i reconfigure X ?

Postby harold95 » Sat Jan 02, 2010 6:05 pm

hello.

just got my old laptop running, on ue2.4.
its nice to have it running again :D
i have been trying for two days and nights now poking and prodding trying to get
the laptop into a 1024x768 mode which i KNOW it cab do.

first, my cd rom does not work. dont even ask how i got it on the hd, because i cant even boot from the usb ports.
its not one of my issues, its just dead. i cannot fix or replace it. its just an fyi, for my real issue.

so......there is no xorg.conf file for me to tinker with so i can get the resolution from 80o0x600 to 1024x768?
what do i use to reconfigure x to get my resolution up? this laptop uses an onboard card, not nvidea or ati, maybe intel or something generic.
this laptop can do it, its just not in the options under display options.
i used to just manually edit xorg.conf to get what i needed.

i tried even making my own even, without success.
i went over to ubuntu and did some reading, trying out xrandr and lxrandr, but i just cant seam to coax this ue2.4
into recognising this laptop can do 1024x768.

thanks for any help i can get on this .

output of xrandr:
Code: Select all
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 240, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   800x600        60.0*    56.0
   640x480        60.0
   400x300        60.0     56.0
   320x240        60.0
  1024x768_60.00 (0x117)   63.5MHz
        h: width  1024 start 1072 end 1176 total 1328 skew    0 clock   47.8KHz
        v: height  768 start  771 end  775 total  798           clock   59.9Hz

when i try the --addmode option i get:

Code: Select all
xrandr --addmode Display 1024x768
xrandr: cannot find output "Display"

i guess i dont know what my output is called, and once i do, how do i set it as my default?

thanks
