Trashed my swap partition.

Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.4

Trashed my swap partition.

Postby NicelyMKVI » Sat Jan 02, 2010 10:03 am

I am still kinda new to Linux in certain ways. I changed my swap partition and now my system will not boot. i was going to change the size of it and reformatted it. I realized too late and went back and changed it to swap again. I left everything the same size etc. I want to install Ultimate Edition 2.5 anyway but I need to back up my evolution mail and Firefox. Is there anyway I can get in there and retrieve my evolution and firefox settings etc. I have made backups of them but I made several changes recently and did not back up yet. I am using Ultimate Edition 2.4 and am now booting with live usb.

Thanks,
Jason

I am using the live 2.4 usb. I keep trying to copy my home directory or parts of it to my separate storage partition or a separate usb drive and I keep getting "Error while copying. The folder ".pki" cannot be handled because you do not have permissions to read it." I skip the pki file and it just continues doing this with basically every file I need.

During my search I realized my home directory should be on the separate storage partition. Makes common since actually....duh.

Thanks for the help. I have googled everything I can and can not find the answer.

Don't worry about the pki file.

It is best to put /,and home on a separate partition.

You said you were able to retrieve the files you wanted,so your last statement is confusing.

If it isn't to mucked up maybe we can fix it.What was the error when it wouldn't boot after changing the swamp?

Sorry, I did not word it well. It does the same thing to all the files in the home directory. It will not allow me to copy any of them except a few I do not need. It says I do not have permission to copy. I can not get my home folder to copy to my storage partition or a usb drive.

I still wonder why my system will not boot with a messed up swap while other people say they can boot, just very slow boot times. I tried changing my UUID of my swap partition back to what it was before I altered it, with gedit /etc/ftsb ,while using live usb and it will not let me change it.

I can set my system back up with a clean install but hate to go through all the work when it is just right there.

Thanks for your replies Cell

You might have to update grub2 before it can boot.If you took swamp out,and did not update grub its probably confused as heck.If you boot does it kick you to tty,or a cli prompt?Does it give a grub error?
If it does then
Code: Select all
 sudo update-grub
,or
Code: Select all
sudo grub-mkconfig
,and then see if grub2 corrects it's self. Then you should be able to boot.

As for permission to get the files-what ever your using run it under sudo.you might get in that way.Pop the live disk in let it boot up then use a root script on the desk top,or on your partition where the files are.

O.k then boot into recovery and use the update grub tab....tho if it hits the splash it might not be a grubby issue,or it might...
