But there are others without kde/kdm but with the same problem.http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1356482&page=2. And that defenitely tells against the kdm/kde theory.

They also have two X sessions starting up, just don't have one defaulting to kdm and other to gdm like we do. Probably because they have Ubuntu (only comes with Gnome) and we have Ultimate Edition (comes with both KDE and Gnome)

I am running out of ideas, when I get some free time I will look into posting on some other forum for help, maybe Xorg people will know how to solve this.

I'll post back here if I find a solution.

P.S. Tried on THREE UE2.5 laptops (1 Dell, 2 Acers), recreated issue on all 3

Last night I ignored the prompt and Pressed Ctrl+Alt+F9 to logged in to the ALREADY running xserver. After that at each restart the Generic kernel displays "Ubuntu started with low resolution... OK'. and the monitor is blank except the ususal " ? Mhz" display [the one we get after disconnecting the monitor from PC]. I am able to boot in to Recovery mode and when I enter Resume the xserver starts normally. No duplicates.

Rings any bells?

Hope I will not have to reinstall Ultimate Edition 2.5 with the "I hate the GDM Login in 2.4 / Karmic" again and all my beautiful login screens will not become useless.

Dear TheeMahn, please attend to it as so many of us has run in to the problem please !

SOLVED

Postby storm_to » Wed Dec 23, 2009 3:58 pm

Posted for help on 2 other foums and got no help (Ubuntu and freeBSD/Xorg)
Been wresteling with this problem on multiple PCs for a few days now and I finally figured it out!

Looked at /etc/init and noticed both kdm.conf and gdm.conf are checking if they are the default display manager in /etc/X11/default-display-manager expecting different file content
Then I noticed that I don't have that file.
So I reinstalled new gdm (apt-get install gdm) since that worked fine
Notice I do have the file
Reinstalled gdm-2.20 (apt-get install gdm-2.20) and created my own file
Code: Select all
sudo echo "/usr/sbin/gdm" > /etc/X11/default-display-manager

Problem Solved!
Make sure your gdm is in /usr/sbin with
Code: Select all
which gdm

Also 1st make sure that you have that problem where a working kdm starts up same time as gdm or else this fix won't work for you.

Side Notes:
Installing gdm-2.20 while having gdm will automatically remove gdm, no need to do it manually.
Same goes vice versus, installing gdm ontop of gdm-2.20 will remove older one 1st.

You can do all this from console with apt-get or from Gnome Synaptic application.

Enjoy!

For those not willing to roll back their GDM, and still wanting a solution: checkout https://launchpad.net/gdm2setup.

It is capable of doing most of the changes desired/possible in the newer GDM, has a familiar GUI, is available as a PPA so that it can be added to your system updates and is currently a stable release as well as being developed avidly.
