Help and support for Ultimate Edition 2.4

Re: Graphics-ATI issues?Post here please.

Postby Cell » Mon Nov 30, 2009 3:57 am

Hi.

I have an ATI all-in-wonder, based on the Radeon 9600.

The problem is that randomly when I start the PC, sometimes everything is white. I can see only the mouse pointer and that's all. But in the back looks like things are workin': when I press the F12 key to open the Guake Terminal and write the reboot command it works. Once it reboots everything is OK.

So what is it? It didn't happened whit the previous versions of Ultimate Edition

Thanks.

Are you running compiz on start up?Do you know which driver your using? Is it an agp card?

Hi.

Yes, I created a service at the start up with the command "fusion-icon", I'm using emerald theme manager and runing the avant window navigator at the start up as well.

Yes it is an AGP card, and for the driver I don't know how to find out that.

Thanks.

First thing...try start up without compiz, and then see if it remedies the problem.I'm assuming your using vga,and not dvi?If you are Take not that I had some weired graphic output with vga output, and so have others.I actually have an 9600 also.I seem to remember the white screen, but can't remember if it was with karmic or not.

Anywho...try the compiz trick. If it still does it then you will have to make a xorg.conf, and edit the bit about agp,and then put it in your x11 folder...MAYBE. Use my above instructions to do so.

Cell

Just thought of something else....look in synaptics for RADEON DRIVER,and install it...Be warned it might bork your system...but I doubt it.

It got worst.

After and update the system made today, I always get the white screen. I disable the compiz autoload and now i can see everything, but now I get a dialog telling me that my screen it´s not composite and therefore the avant window navigator can´t be load.

Yes I´m using VGA, and in synaptics it´s a tick for the xserver-xorg-video-radeon.

What shall I do? I don´t want to roll back to Ultimate Edition 2.3

Help please.

Theres a bug in the driver that doesn't allow you to use anything above agp1 by default. You have to go and make an xorg.conf file your self, and edit it to use agp 4,or above.

Not saying this will fix it...I don't know. But this has been the first thing I always done when using an agp card.I put my drive in my old box,and fire up the 9600 to see if I can replicate your problem...maybe in a few days.In the mean time research what I said above so your not going in blind.

In the mean time you can start both compiz, and the dock up after you log in.

Ok. I did this:

Cell wrote:heres how to make an xorg.conf file ,and use it.

Code: Select all
sudo Xorg -configure

I have the file at my home folder, and also try the last command, but it didn't work and not idea how to copy the error here.

Research these options while Ill get my other box up.

The xorg. file you just made is what you will have to edit.It doesn't do anything on its own.Give me a few...

Hi.

I've just realised that sometimes the resolution of the screen changes. I mean, sometimes it's higher that others. I don't know if it is related or not with the rest.

Thanks

Good news (especially if you're running Ultimate Edition 2.4 x64); PenguinCatalyst (Catalyst 9.12 for Linux) *will* install on Ultimate Edition 2.4!

While (for some weird reason) I had issues with the driver from the repos, running the installer from AMD's site (9.12) worked a treat (which certainly isn't the case with a standard 9.10; Catalyst 9.11 and 9.12 complain about too new a version of X with a standard Karmic).

Here's something I can't figure out; except for some stuff that is actually *newer* than a standard Karmic (including the kernel), Ultimate in 2.4 trim is a fusion of the GNOME and KDE spins of Karmic (GNOME front end, but with several apps included from KDE 4.x). So why would 9.12 flop in Karmic (and Lucid, for that matter), but work in Ultimate 2.4, which splits the diff between them?

(I'm merely curious, because 9.12 is actually working in Ultimate 2.4, while 9.12 failed in both Lucid and an updated Karmic.)
