Postby Cell » Sat Nov 07, 2009 2:58 am

This first section is geared towards new Ultimate Edition users. If you have been using Ultimate Edition sense 2.2 then you already should know this bit.

So you decided to install Ultimate Edition, and have an ATI graphics card.Your wondering how do I install my driver now?Well first you have to know what kind you have.Once you figured that out take a look at this.

from ATI...
The following products have been moved to the legacy software support structure (including Mobile and All-in-Wonder Variants):

ATI Radeon 9500 Series
ATI Radeon 9550 Series
ATI Radeon 9600 Series
ATI Radeon 9700 Series
ATI Radeon 9800 Series
ATI Radeon X300 Series
ATI Radeon X550 Series
ATI Radeon X600 Series
ATI Radeon X700 Series
ATI Radeon X800 Series
ATI Radeon X850 Series
ATI Radeon X1050 Series
ATI Radeon X1300 Series
ATI Radeon X1550 Series
ATI Radeon X1600 Series
ATI Radeon X1650 Series
ATI Radeon X1800 Series
ATI Radeon X1900 Series
ATI Radeon Xpress Series
ATI Radeon X1200 Series
ATI Radeon X1250 Series

AMD may periodically provide Windows XP and Windows Vista driver updates (for the products listed above) for critical fixes only. No new features will be provided in future driver updates. The Linux ATI Catalyst™ driver will only be supported in Linux distributions prior to February 2009 for the legacy products listed above.

Any customers using a combination of a ATI Radeon™ HD 2000 Series, ATI Radeon™ HD 3000 Series, or ATI Radeon™ HD 4000 Series product with any of the legacy products listed above in a single PC system must use the ATI Catalyst 9.3 or earlier driver. All future ATI Catalyst™ releases made available past the ATI Catalyst™ 9.3 release will not include support for the legacy products listed above or any of the features associated with those legacy products.

Well now your thinking "what do I do now?" its simple...nothing.You might be thinking "well how is this all working without a driver?"
This is where the old users should read if you haven't been on top of the new xorg.

Its simple...in a nut shell the new xorg. will (should) pick the the driver you need."Well thats cool how do I edit the xorg.conf file to tweak the driver?" Again...you do nothing. The xorg.conf file is non existent in Ultimate Edition 2.4. Go ahead try to find it ;) So...basically What you have after you reboot from an install is the performance your going to get.I said basically...There are other repos you can enable to get the most up to date driver. Also there's newer kernels to go with those drivers.Ill get into this later.
You might have two cards in crossfire. If your card runs in the ATI list above you will not have crossfire (like mine).

Now your either wary of all this(the new user),or your still cursing ATI(the older users ;) ) I would normally fall into the later...but so far I'm not.The new open source driver works great...better than in the past.Thank you Devs I can play the native games with decent fps's (wine is still getting there.Soon there will be better 3d support with games played in wine),I can use all the eye candy,I have no video tearing.ect. For the first time sense Jaunty I have not needed to "tweak" the driver to get anything working.(nothing that is Linux native)

I hope this helped a bit.I know my results might be different.Thats why we have this specific thread,so go ahead, and post if there are issues. Take note that all the above covers the cards in the list from ATI.If you have a hd card then you will be able to install the FGLRX driver from Jockey(hardware drivers),or the driver from ATI's web site.

O.k. Ill be editing this post here with updates as I learn the ins and outs of the new xorg.

Above I mentioned that there isn't an xorg.config file in Karmic(2.4) anymore...I was right. Now I learned that you can in fact insert an xorg.config file in your x11 folder. So if your still have a tweaked xorg.config file from Jaunty...save it!If you insert your old file,or an generic one(I will provide a generic file) Karmic will use it.
Edited 11/23/09

heres how to make an xorg.conf file ,and use it.

Code: Select all
sudo service gdm stop

will kill x the nice way

Code: Select all
sudo Xorg -configure

will make a new xorg.conf. also it will show what you have enabled.

Code: Select all
sudo servive gdm start

will get you into x.When you made a new xorg.conf there was a massage saying where it was saved. Go to it,and check it out.You can edit it there also.

Oh ya....if you want to try the new exorg.conf while after step 2 then ...

Code: Select all
X -config /where it was saved/xorg.cong.new

If you want karmic to use it then you have to put it in the x11 folder.

I used this to make a xorg.conf to try to get s-video out.It works...the method that is.I never got s-video out.The driver just doesn't support it in the rv5xx,and rv6xx cards.

ok i read the post twice .. i don't have video problems except about 6 inch's of dead screen when i run unmirrored screens..

that said the problem i have has been persistant since the hardy hotrod edition 8.10 .. that is no sound over hdmi .. it sees it clearly i'm running an intergrated x1200 video and sound is all routed through the same section of mother board..

now we know the abilty is there from the example we had in 8.10 .. there has to be way to tweak the xorg source to rout the sound back through the hdmi cable when the hdmi card is selected in system preferences sound..

a good tekie never knows all the answers .. the secret is to know were to ask the right qestion to get the answer ..

any takers on this issue??

FYI i'm a hardware tech not software i can wire it build it. its up to you scripters to make it work..
get me a schematic of t1631 gateway i'll jump a wire from the headphones to the hdmi so fast you want have time to script a brutforce on a zip file in perl

The radeonhd driver supports sound over hdmi.I believe. You see we have more than one option for drivers. Not all the options has the same support for any one card.It depends on what you want then you pick your driver.

theres no 3d support with the radeonhd driver too.

that didn't work for me on 2.3 it says it will now as did you but i have found that karmic is funny about reinstalling drivers its not as easy to trouble shoot driver problems if the test driver failed.

but we will see

ill follow up with this post..

thanks

trying to get the x1200 radeonhd video/sound intergrated board to route sound to the hdmi port with the video ..

Screenshot-1.png

Screenshot-2.png

as i said it sees the hardware and says it is sending the sound .. but there is nothing coming out..

as there was no sound post i defaulted to this post as it is the same card ..

the source for the radeonhd driver has codeing for the hdmi sound port# in coded into it as well ..

if you feel i am in error i requesting the help from you say so, i shall seek elsewhere

the secret to get the right answer is to know were ask the right question.. perhaps i am not in the right place for the answers i seek

thanks
