The problem is it doesn't see my tv out on the s-video.It sees both my dvi outs.I've tried xrandr but it just doesn't see it.I'm working on inserting a xorg.conf file in karmic,or least part of one that has the commands to tell karmic to look for s-video.

1. Connect your PC to the TV via HDMI cable (duh).
2. Use xrandr to get picture to the TV. Ex: xrandr --output DVI-D_1 --mode 1280x768 --right-of PANEL. Simply typing xrandr will give you a list of your valid outputs.
3. Run aplay -l to get the list of your sound devices. Find HDMI and note the card number and corresponding device number. Example of what you want to see: card 1: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
4. Try sending sound to this device: aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav. Be sure to change plughw:z,y to match your hardware number found with last command. You should be able to hear the test sound from your TV.

Works in Jaunty...you might be able to use it for your application.

you know i go into win 7 or win vista pull up windows media server .. i can see all the movies i have on the media enabled wireless network drive, i can see all the movies on my grandsons ps3 "which is also a media server" .. i can choose to add movie's to my computer and see them from the ps3 just as if it was a media server guess it is .. i can install media server on my 2000 server box .. free which win 2000 free of charge for personal use a year or so ago .. and its ten years old..

every new computer sold in 2009 well nearly has or can be ordered or built with hdmi outputs to server as a home entertainment center..

Linux releases a new distro every 6 months .. and no one has even attempted to right an add-on that would search and find media servers on the network .. something is wrong with that .. clearly the market for computers is headed in the direction to become the center of entertainment in the home .. and we ain't even in the running ..

I've read that there was not enough attention dedicated to the media entertainment side of Linux ..

proof in the pudding is the trouble i am haveing in reference to this issue here ..

hell your having trouble with hdmi....s-video won't even work. figured out how to insert a xorg.conf file in karmic....but theres no point. every time karmic boots up it rewrites it. could make a script for start up,but hell even with the mod lines in it s-video doesn't work....lol.

the best media boxes are the hardy ones, xbmc stand alone,or an x-box with yellow dog. wouldn't even dream of expecting a new ubuntu working out of the box...unless i did research ,and only purchased friendly hardware.

and we ain't even in the running ..

actually I can do more with an linux box, than ms.your not looking at the big picture....if something doesn't work I can always use a different distro...or write code to make it work.can't do that with windows....mostly.

hmmm...my shift key isn't working...another thing to look into.

OK I have a Latitude C510 with an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY built in video, screen resolution is pretty good, except for the pop ups. the sys mon in screenlets, the search box that opens up upon boot. they give me a widow full of static. Is this an easy fix?

Hello billhedrick.

Yoy can try to follow the next post from Gentoo
Ok, at the moment it looks like I have finally solved the riddle!

Problems encountered:

1.) Don't use the console framebuffer. The DRM/Radeon modules must be initialized by xorg and not before.

2.) Linux kernel 2.6.16.1 + suspend 2.2.4 + voluntary kernel preemption seems to work fine here.

3.) Use the following xorg.conf. Look at the driver setup. There seem to be 3 critical points. I have a ThinkPad model 2672-C8G.

Code: Select all
#
#mark@nina ~ $ glxgears
#2112 frames in 5.0 seconds = 422.400 FPS
#2445 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.000 FPS
#2436 frames in 5.0 seconds = 487.200 FPS
#2445 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.000 FPS
#2445 frames in 5.0 seconds = 489.000 FPS

# To customise the XKB settings to suit your keyboard, modify the
# lines below (which are the defaults).  For example, for a non-U.S.
# keyboard, you will probably want to use:
#       Option  "XkbModel"      "pc102"
# If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:
#       Option  "XkbModel"      "microsoft"
#
# Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.
# For example, a german layout can be obtained with:
#       Option  "XkbLayout"     "de"
# or:
#       Option  "XkbLayout"     "de"
#       Option  "XkbVariant"    "nodeadkeys"
#
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and
# control keys, use:
#       Option  "XkbOptions"    "ctrl:swapcaps"
# Or if you just want both to be control, use:
#       Option  "XkbOptions"    "ctrl:nocaps"
#
