Gnome tweaking

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

cool yeah that's where it is <BREW>
Now everytime I open Gnome it pops up and I click restart and close it and it runs in the background.

With the Mozilla browser it seems that the letters in text boxes (such as search, username, and password entry) are white for some reason. :?: Can I change the color somehow? Tried changing themes in Mozilla and Gnome desktop neither did a thing.

I've gotten it to a really really light gray now. Can't see when I highlight but at least I can read what I type.

NEW!!1 (12.20.09)
I want to change the login screen from that blue xubuntu. I downloaded a few from Eyescandy and how do I apply them. I don't see "login screen" anymore.

Please forgive me but I forget what Ultimate you are running, it helps a lot to keep your sig. updated ;) If you are running say 2.4 or 2.5 with xsplash, there is very little you can do to "customize" the login screen But you can install gdm2.20 and get your good old login screen back (thanks to TheeMahn 8-) )
..................................................................................................................................................
DISCLAIMER:Should you decide to do what I am going to provide, there is a good chance unless you are an advanced user you may tear up your installation of Ubuntu / Ultimate Edition 2.4+ and require re-installation. I take no responsibility should this happen. Personally, I DO NOT suggest you do this on any production system.

BACK UP YOUR IMPORTANT DOUMENTS AND HOME FOLDER !!

THIS SCRIPT IS EXPERAMENTAL !!!!

Open a terminal. Applications >> Accessories >> Terminal
Copy and paste the following: (The whole script after "select all")
I created a file called weenie.sh (this is what I thought I was going to get)
paste the following:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gdm-2.20
cd /etc/gdm
sudo sed 's|X11R6/||' gdm.conf >/tmp/gdm.conf
sudo mv /tmp/gdm.conf .

(This may not be needed in some cases,It will goto select gdm 2.20)
Yes you need the period at the end. sudo chmod 777 weenie.sh
sudo killall gdm (this will drop you to a black screen) login and type ./weenie.sh

select gdm-2.20 at the selection screen

after it finishes sudo reboot now

after reaching the desktop you will find a long lost and greatly missed tool:
goto System>Administration>login window !
You should now have your GDM and login sounds back !
NOTE: you will no longer have the xsplash

I have run this script several times had a issue once,no big deal

A big thanks to TheeMahn (Guru of Ultimate Edition)for this !!

Hope this helps ! As far as reviewing you other post's ,You are responsible for keeping your posts "fresh",please review "your post's" and kindly ask if a solution has been found, and (or) review them and try to resolve them with a google search ! ;) Google is our friend! :D <BREW>

For those not willing to roll back their GDM, and still wanting a solution: checkout https://launchpad.net/gdm2setup.

It is capable of doing most of the changes desired/possible in the newer GDM, has a familiar GUI, is available as a PPA so that it can be added to your system updates and is currently a stable release as well as being developed avidly.
