PPA caused system update to developer - Karmic?

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

PPA caused system update to developer - Karmic?

Postby linuxux » Mon Oct 26, 2009 10:38 pm

After a reboot my network was down.
ifconfig showed only lo
Tried /etc/init.d/ ./networking restart - it didnt show restarting any interfaces.
So I rebooted and this time the grub screen got stuck at that almost blank screen, says loading grub 1 or something, and press escape for menu.

The menu shows Developer - Karmic.
From /boot/grub/menu.lst, "title Ubuntu karmic (development branch), kernel 2.6.28-15-generic"
Oops.

So. I reviewed my /etc/apt/sources.list and posted it below. (I removed most commented lines)
The only reference to karmic is from the recent Remmina install.
Remmina is THE vnc client for Linux. After 12+ hours or experimenting, I should know. Anyway...
I posted about Remmina here http://forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=64&t=3970&p=43422#p43422

I think it's pretty obvious the last line added for Remmina is the problem deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/llyzs/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
My questions....

1. Is it OK to install Remmina this way, but then right after remove the repo? Or will some karmic files cause perpetual issues? (I have other 9.04 boxes)
2. Any advice on what's in there, or needs to be now that I'm on karmic? Maybe I could just leave it like this (without the ppa) until Karmic is more stable?
3. What would happen if I boot to jaunty kernel at this time? I'm scared because some changes were already made to the networking, I dunno what else will get messed up.
4. Should I reinstall?

Just to let you know you are talking here on 230 packages to be upgrade!!
let me give you some big TIP here.
Ultamatix will do the work for you on the UPGRADE very soon
U.E 2.2+2.3 will be able to make the Upgrade from there.
Hope now you can understand where you have made the wrong steps on the upgrade.

Hello linuxux .

Let me break it down for you.
1- you must add all the karmic source ,to your source list.
2- then you can start the upgrade process from 9.04 to 9.10.
3- you have to synchronize synaptic with the new sources,
and you have do delete the U.E repo from synaptic.
4- U.E repo and sources will not work with Ubuntu 9.10.
5- to add software from U.E you need to install Ubuntu Tweak,Ultamatix,
Then you can have U.E packages that will work with Ubuntu 9.10.

Hope that explain you batter were the problem with your upgrade start.
OR some more help for you:

Hi Linuxux,
Actually that PPA is only for Karmic and U must not use it right now. Just uncomment it and reload your sources.

You could probably try SVN build
$ svn co https://remmina.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/remmina/ remmina

or

build from source.

Good luck...

Hello linuxux.

If your not trying to upgrade then you can try what jai suggested or you can wait for Ultimate Edition 2.4 so that if & when you add the source list you have above, it won't pose a problem as the source list is already Karmic native!!

It "might" pose a problem if the os is running on an file system other than ext4.See karmics release notes, and known problems.

lol, hopefully. But hey there ain't no way like the hard way.Just think as it like I do...Ubuntu is not the same as it used to be.If you (the users) want to do things like the past then be prepared to learn something about the os,and don't complain. ;)

Then again a new ubuntu user should not have any problems at all.Well there is still issues with intel, ati, nvidia graphics, lcd, some wifi chipsets ,and so on.but this has been true since the beginning of linux...at least since I first started using it.Which was some time ago.
