ubuntu newb :)

Postby daytone » Mon Sep 21, 2009 4:09 am

hi everyone,
ubuntu noooob here.
iv downloaded UE2.3, burnt to dvd, ran the os from the dvd to see wot all the fuss was about.
ok i thought this looks a damm sight better than vista lets get it installed and have a proper play with it.
it would'nt let me install from disc, i just got a error message pop up saying that the dvd drive is dirty or hot.(the drive is not hot and its is not dirty).

ok lets look at trying something else then.
iv tried to install from the iso using magic iso in xp, sweet is doing something :).
ok now i have and xp boot and a ubuntu boot on pc start up(cool progress).
when i boot to ubuntu its nothing like the UE2.3 on the burnt dvd.
help say thats its Ubuntu 9.4
ok so i might need to update ubuntu(was my thinking),
ran/installed all the updates, now firefox duznt work at all,
and it still duznt look like ue2.3,
and its all a beige theme and not much in the way of applications.
and im typing this from xp.

any thoughts chaps?

Hello daytone and welcome to the U.E Forum.

lets start with the point that windows system do not work like the Linux system,
The issue here is the file system.
so you can not install the Linux system on ntfs/FAT32!
when you try to install Linux on windows that will never make the installation for you.
you need to make partition Unallocated with Parted Magic for Linux,
Then During the installation process you will be ask where to install the system.
in this point you will have to mark the partition that you create for Linux (Unallocated ),
and you will need to install Grub to your MBR.
U.E build on Ubuntu 9.4 platform, but there is allot of differences between them
as you will see very soon.
then please use the Advanced search for any question that you have before posting your questions here.
you have The How To's section, that you can find allot of help from the U.E community.
So please take your time to learn.

Hi daytone,
It sounds as though your 'burn' may have had issues. Try to re-burn your ISO on the slowest speed possible. (this is one of the most common problems newbies and experienced users have). Once done, 'boot' from the DVD and run the install from within the Live session (ie, click the install icon on the desktop). By the sounds of things, installing from a mounted image in XP will only install the basic Ubuntu 9.04 without the U.E 2.3 'extras'. Even if your original DVD booted and seemed to work O.K doesn't mean the burn was fully successful.

Cheers.

I really "wish" I had time to address issues as I have had in the past. Learn from Moebius, that is the best way to address a open situation. Sometimes what seems simple is the best initial approach to a problem. Damn admin assume you are a nix pro, Damn it I am a admin ;) NOT Everyone is a "NIX GOD" & all users should be approached as a newbie accordingly.

Once the user says, yeah yeah I am no newbie then he is to be treated as such. I will not elaborate any further.

I do not have the time to answer your question, I just wanted to shake up the forum & make them re-think the way they answer you & did so openly.
