Brand New to UE2.3 (Intro, First Impressions, and Questions)

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

This makes NO sense. I am apparently losing stuff of the usb stick live OS - as evidenced by the fact that a couple of things automatically loaded at startup... bombed.

But I just tried the Install Hardware option again - and it succeeded at grabbing the Broadcom driver!

THAT wasn't working all day! Now it is. I 0disconnected the ethernet cable and it sees my wireless device - and is using it.

EDIT: At the time of this edit, I am once again able to download/install the broadcom driver.

I do believe that TestDisk might hold the solution - although it swore up and down that my Vista partition was unrecoverable, after messing with it I have regained access to it from within the Ultimate Edition live OS environment.

Driver,

O.K here is one more trix for you= to get your DATA OUT FROM VISTA ;)
you need Parted Magicfor this trix,
so I will post you link for download in very short time after I will upload it for you.
this is the Parted Magic 3.
so it will be easy for you to work with.

now THE TRIX -you have to boot from the disc,
that Parted Magic work from RAM after it boots.
the it will go off from you CD/DVD= that is O.K.
you have there software for CD/DVD burn.
Then Enter CD/DVD blank to your CD/DVD,
then you can get all your files to be burn directly to your CD/DVD ;)

Optimized at approximately 45MB, the Parted Magic OS employs core programs of GParted and Parted to handle partitioning tasks with ease, while featuring other useful programs (e.g. Partition Image, TestDisk, fdisk, sfdisk, dd, ddrescue) and an excellent set of documentation to benefit the user. An extensive collection of fileystem tools are also included, as Parted Magic supports the following: ext2, ext3, ext4, fat16, fat32, hfs, hfs+, jfs, linux-swap, ntfs, reiserfs, reiser4, and xfs.

Version 3 is updated with: Linux 2.6.26, Parted 1.8.8, ntfsprogs-2.0.0, ntfs-3g-2712, and GParted-0.3.8; Uses Busybox for basic Unix commands and networking, and Firefox to surf the Web.

I can mount it while using Ultimate Edition live usb. The laptop by itself can't see it it still pulls a [FAIL/PWNED] every time I try to just boot it normally.

My whole intent was (and is) to install the most current version of Ultimate Edition on my laptop in a properly functioning dual-boot configuration with Vista so that I can attempt to learn how to use Ultimate Edition/linux while (a) having a nice stable OS to fall back upon - the fact that in trying to install Ultimate Edition, the Vista got hosed... doesn't count against Vista (objectively, I would think it would be the... non-Vista at fault) - for the obvious reasons, so that I don't get panicky due to trying to learn on an OS that I HAVE to use 100% of the time, and so that every person that comes by and uses the computer can still do so without having to learn the new OS first.

I am going to disappear for a few minutes so that I can reboot Ultimate Edition live and try again to win the Broadcom driver download lottery. Will return.

(For clarity I did not hack any more text out of that last paragraph.)

Failing that, I would settle for just getting Vista back with its data intact.

So I guess my main purpose at present is to be able to turn on the laptop and have Vista logon screen appear. After that I will go back to trying to install/learn/enjoy Ultimate Edition.

EDIT: I took a minute to edit down all my post from pages 2-5. Hope it was done adequately to comply with the rules. Again, apologies.

You can do what you want how it stands now.(have a duel boot, and have vista boot first)

I think your just expecting it to be a chore, but it really isn't...thus it seems like it is.When you install Ultimate Edition it should take care of the grub, and automatically see vista. After that point Ultimate Edition will boot first....but you can change that.If it doesn't see vista by chance its a hell of a lot easer to fix within a usable os, i.e. Ultimate Edition The issue with the wifi is minor...it will be fixed. The issue that you have laptop that is non usable is major...which also can be fixed.

I guess now the real question is how are you going to set up the partitions for linux,or do I understand correctly that you already have some linux partitions with mandy? If so just use those partitions for Ultimate Edition Overwrite them with an manual install of Ultimate Edition

Just remember...Linux will only do what you tell it to do...99% of the time.So if you overwrite the vista partition it was most likely operator error. If your not sure of a step in the install procedure... ask.
