I do not want to have to launch Firefox and then launch Gmail from a toolbar. The less keystrokes the better, but thank you for your suggestion.
After looking at all the options, the most useful tool to me is the Mail Notification icon in the System Tray. It tells me how many new messages I have and plays a sound whenever a new message is received.
