Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.3

Happy with 2.2

Postby tork » Thu Jul 23, 2009 1:27 am

Ok, I'm happy with 2.2. Why should I upgrade and risk messing with something that's working so good? I'm sorry if this sounds silly but even though I love having the latest and greatest, I also love having a system that just, you know, works..... Assume for a moment that I don't even know how to upgrade. Been a Windows man for soooooo Looooong and I just receintly made the switch to Ubuntu. Is there a way to install 2.3 like a service pack on Windows? I see that backing up is a necessity from reading other post, can I just restore after upgrading? Sorry if this is basic. Even if someone could just point me in the right direction to read information that is already available I would greatly appreciate it.

All I really want to do is make music, read email, Surf the net, watch movies on my big screen and someday set up a terminal server so I can use these two thin clients I already have. Oh yea, and learn as much as I can about Ubuntu and your awesome versions.

By the way I started with a Tandy back in 1977. Had a Commador 64 and even played with an Ozborn until I got my first Zeneth in 1986, so I have some limited experiance with computers but Ubuntu is so different for me. Maybe I'm just getting old. :geek:

One possible method of determining what will and won't work on 2.3 would be to install it in a virtual machine (you can use Virtualbox to do so, whether you want to do it in Windows or Linux.)

While there are benefits to the new version (ext4 being the most significant, IMHO) there is no distinct reason to upgrade if your system is functioning as you want it to. Many people choose to not fix something that isn't broken, so you would have a lot of company should you choose to stay with the status quo. That is at least a important part of the philosophy behind Ubuntu's L.ong T.erm S.upport versions....

Don't feel all alone! I have 1.9 running on 1 machine, and I won't change it  It's rock solid, and all the programs I need for my graphics work are compatible, so I leave it alone...Although I'll download and run the "Live" DVD, many times I won't install...I know it's hard not to be on the "Cutting Edge" but if that's not what you need your system for, then stay where you are...possibly wait for the next LTS version, as bpollen suggested, and I'm sure you'll be very happy :D
