Hi!

Is it an easy way to upgrade from earlyer (p.e. ultimate edition 2.0) version to the current?
Do I need to do a clean install, or is there a way to upgrade somehow (.. and how to do) ?

Hello Rudy, I have had reports of users doing this maddog for example, he is however one of my moderators, I would not suggest it to a normal user. I highly suggest a "clean" install. storing your home directory on its own partition is a wise move. I never do this because I am always building a new one

You may want to PM maddog he may walk you through it.

I have tried and failed... I do know Toten Hosen literally translates to "The Dead Trousers" in English

If he does this for me, I will research him here (something I typically do not have time to do) & go from there.

Right now, I am going to install Ultimate Edition 2.3 "Hopefully" for the last time & upload it. I will let you gents toss it through the ringers & await your feedback. I yanked all KDE customizations except the wallpaper I was witnessing issues with "DBUS" not being able to find a socket. I may at my convenience do the others (Cursor, Icons GTK & time permitting may learn how to make a custom KDE splash), this means it may not be "final".

Install perfect both enviornments work did not check out XFCE ntl I am sure it works. Uploading...

Please take the time to test the theme in Ultimate Edition 2.3 I am uploading as I type the kde theme is default, however here is how to change it please report any bugs you witness theme wise (this may change before it goes final):

Ran the long smart test from my bios (i assume that would be good enough). It passed. I did think about that though. Ive since did a reinstall on ext3 this time. And it seems to have cured the problem. Not sure if it was the reinstall or the fact that i went back to ext3 that cured the problem though. Even compiled the latest kernel from the git tree before i reinstalled. That didnt help. Im beginning to think that perhaps ext4 isnt quite realy yet. The speed improvement is amazing though with ext4. It didnt happen until i deleted a rather large file (approx 8.5gb...was a dvd d/l image). So maybe ext4 has issues with larger files.

I have to agree with you on the speed gain typically with ext3 I get around 50, 60 MB/s tops (ext4 on karmic):

I haven't scrapped any large files so I cant say weather or not I would get the hammer or not I am glad you got it fixed none the less.

I think i was generally getting around 60 before. My main drive was on ext4 and my data drive was still ext3 because i didnt have anywhere to put the almost 600gb of data that is on it. Got terrible transfer speeds at first though from one drive to the other until i removed "reatime" from the fstab line for both disks. Before that i was luck to get 10MB/s when copying files between the two. I think i could maybe get up to 70 i think on ext3 if i swapped my main drive out for one identical to my data drive mainly due to it have a larger cache (32MB). Im actually curious to see what 2 of them would due in raid0 (The new seagate 1tb's...with firmware fix). Although running 2 1tb drives in raid0 would be a waste of space would still be nice to see the numbers. Would be smarter to run 2 320's (believe those have the same cache) in the longterm.

Btw i seen your running karmic. Did they really move from grub to grub2 like they were rumored to do?

I am sorry to now inform you & yes I was at the time running karmic base Ultimate Edition 2.3 (it was actually Ultimate Edition 2.2 upgraded to karamic with my Ultimate Edition 2.3 theme pack). I am now running Ultimate Edition 2.3 based on Jaunty, I always enjoy a glimpse into the future I do not want to get into the details openly, however you as an admin will be able to grab it for testing maybe is as early as tomorrow.

Raid totally rocks, I just do not trust it I have lost a ton of info using it. I like to now think of it as my lifes work & really pay close attention to what I have & where it is (raid1 style) I have 2 500 GB "Raid Edition" hard disks the 320's (also raided) really had to work just to accept the data, while the 500's took a "smoke" break. You do know drives are typically faster at reading then writing. I would love to see Solid state raided a glimpse into the future for me

I think I will ask maddog about it, probably have some tips. I would prefer upgrade this time. Anyhow there are just a few things to back up. As always keeping important and personal data and backups on different media (other hdd, usb stuff, or dvd) is always the best idea.
