Wired Connection Cannot Obtain IP Address [SOLVED]

Postby archeryguru2000 » Fri Aug 28, 2009 12:14 pm

Hello all, I have a small problem with my network connectivity. My wireless is working just fine, but my wired connection is unable to obtain an IP address. I have no clue how long this has been an issue as I generally use only my wireless (laptop).

However, I recently have tried to set up a connection to a couple of network printers through a wired connection and was not able to succeed. I have Wicd as my network manager, and upon plugging in my ethernet cable, a wired option becomes available for network connections. I choose connect... and wait. Eventually, a pop-up window is displays that states an ip address could not be obtained. I've tried multiple outlets with the same results.

Here's a few CLI outputs for added info:
Code: Select all
$: lspci -nn | grep 'Ethernet'
00:0a.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: nVidia Corporation MCP67 Ethernet [10de:054c] (rev a2)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller [0200]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter [168c:001c] (rev 01)

Code: Select all
$: ifconfig eth0
eth0      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:1e:68:46:88:6b
          UP BROADCAST MULTICAST  MTU:1500  Metric:1
          RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:33 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
          RX bytes:0 (0.0 B)  TX bytes:5962 (5.9 KB)
          Interrupt:252 Base address:0xc000

Code: Select all
$: cat /etc/network/interfaces
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

Please let me know if there's any other information I may provide that could be of use.

I appreciate any assistance that anybody may have to help me get my wired connection up and running.

Thanks,
~~archery~~

Please look at the screen shot provided blow & make sure that the same is identical on your machine. After adjusting your etho settings. Please visit your modem interface/intranet to make that you have DHCP enable!!

Thanks for the quick reply DarkChild, but you're using the Gnome Network-Manager, I'm using Wicd. My set-up is slightly different than yours. I can just as easily install the Gnome Network-Manager, but would prefer not to if all is the same. It would be nice to find a CLI solution to this problem. I'm fine with GUI's but sometimes you can't really understand what is actually going on by just clicking buttons.

Anyway, I'm not quite sure if I understand what your wanting to get me to do. It appears that you have IP Settings set to DHCP -> Automatic... correct? That is what I have.
dhcp.png

However, your second image is very confusing for me. I'm not quite sure what I'm looking at. I looks like a web page? Is there something in that image that I should be looking for in particular? Sorry, but I'm not very proficient in networking. :P Let me know if there are any commands I should be executing to verify any information.

Thanks,

Hello archeryguru2000 .

you are configure right with your network settings.
what you need to do now is.
log in to your modem/router and configure your modem to be DHCP.
that is all you need to do.
then you will have your network running for you just fine.

Hmm, wouldn't I need admin rights to the modem for that? I guess I should also mention that this is my school's network that I'm trying to connect to. :P That might make a difference in how I approach this. I am a research assistant at this school and I was actually trying to set up a couple of printers that are on their network. I've been on this wired network before, but I rarely use it (laptop's are meant to be wireless ;) right?). I was trying to print something a few days ago, and couldn't connect to their network... that's how this started.

Let me also mention this, I'm currently at my parents house and I can connect to their network (wired and wireless) with no problems, I'm using their wired connection as I'm typing this. It's probably as simple as an incorrect setting in Wicd... but I just can't seem to figure it out. I've asked our IT department to assist, but he couldn't figure it out either. He just said it's something wrong with my computer... "Gee, thanks!".

I may have been using the Gnome Network-Manager the last time I used their wired network (thinking out loud here), I've only recently switched to Wicd. Maybe I should try reinstalling that on Monday and retry this. However, if that solves it... there should be no reason that I cannot connect using Wicd as my network manager?

I'll keep you posted of my progress. Thanks, by the way, for your reply though.

archeryguru2000

The modem will need Admin- user and Admin - password.
so just use:
Admin=user
Admin=pass

to log in to the modem.

and I think you need to go back to Gnome Network-Manager it works fine.
just configure your modem to DHCP and all will work for you again.

Umm, I'm not quite sure I can get those permissions. I'm not an IT person here, I'm a graduate student. I don't think my login/psswd has admin rights. However, I am going to reinstall Gnome's Network-Manager in just a couple of minutes. I'll keep you posted on my progress... as long as I can get online again. :P

Alright, I'm back online with Gnome's Network-Manager. However, still no wired connection. I do not get much feedback with this manager on where the progress is halting but with a similar amount of time that is passing (~20-30 sec), I would assume it is still unable to obtain an IP address.

Boy this is frustrating. :( I think I will retry all of the previous commands that I had tried with Wicd to see if there's any difference.

Can anybody make any sense of this? I'm certain there has to be a way around this. Sooo many other computers are on this network it isn't even funny. I am currently sharing this office with an udergrad and his Windoze machine connected to the wired network without a hitch. He simply plugged in the cable, his computer requested an IP address and... tada internet access.

I'll do some more searching.

archeryguru2000, have you tried boot the Ultimate Edition 2.1 in Live Session to see what the outcome is like with the wired net? If not i will suggest that you do just that for testing purpose. I figure more than less at this stage that your problem maybe branching from so missing/broken packages!!
