Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.1

recent upgrade problems

Postby buck nekked » Sat Jul 04, 2009 12:13 pm

2 days ago I istalled new updates/upgrades on my system at first everything was running smoothly, my default background wasn't there anymore an there was a new icon on my toolbar to put my computer into hybernation mode. but after I rebooted my system and logged into Ultimate Edition my desktop never showed up. just my cursor on a black screen, so I rebooted again and I go some messages saying there was something wrong with the graphics card and gave me options to reset to default, find a solution and fix, or leave as it is. so I reset it to default and yet still nothing. and now even if I boot with the boot disk in the drive it still just brings me to the log in screen and does the same thing. any suggestions? I'm not to worried about what's on the partition I just want to be able to use my computer again

Hello, I am not sure what upgrades you may have installed to "mess up" so much. I just did updates to the computer I am typing this with, running 2.1 and had no problems at all. Did you upgrade to 9.04? Most people don't upgrade, but rather "start over" with a fresh install of the newer OS. That upgrade can cause any number of problems or run smooth, so it is a gamble. Maybe some one else knows what you may have done and has a solution. But for me without knowing what files you downloaded it is difficult to fix it. If there are files, data you wanted to keep then you still have options. If you have plenty of room on the HDD, one thing I did before was to install another version of Ultimate Edition and make a dual boot. When I boot up the newer OS I can see the older partion and copy files from it. Or if you really don't care about the old files, I would just re-install the OS. I really like the 2.2 version, so I plan to get rid of any 2.1. But in any case it is a real good idea to back up any files you really want to keep, as you never know when something bad is going to happen-I learned the hard way!

Hello, oopps I just reread your post, so you can't even boot up properly from a Live Disk now. That sounds like maybe a hardware issue. I am no expert but I can't imagine any software upgrade would prevent you from booting up from a 'LIVE DISK". I am confused as well. Have you tried unplugging everything, wait several minutes and then restart?

yeah I shut everything off let it sit overnight while I tried to figure out what the problem could be and then booted it up again and yeah the live disk won't even start...I'm thinking maybe I need to get partition magic going and starting from scratch....which isn't a big deal. since it's a brand new machine I put together.

Hello buck nekked.

I would have tried removing the cmos battery for a 10 minutes, then boot the system into recovery mode, then "repair broken packages". But you said, "starting from scratch is no big deal" so, just do a fresh install. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Good luck!!
