Random Flashing Screen

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.1

Random Flashing Screen

Postby Firemagic23 » Thu Jun 04, 2009 6:28 pm

I had Ultimate Edition 2.0 64 bit installed and did the update to 9.04 and it caused some weird stuff with the boot up and flashing screen. So I scrapped it all and got the Fresh Jaunty 64bit and reinstalled, WORSE flashing screen when ever I moved my mouse. SO I went back to Ultimate Edition and got the 2.1 64bit and reinstalled again.

At first I was not getting any flashing but as soon as I opened the Compiz Manager I started to get a random flashing X through my screen. If you fill the upper and lower parts of the X with gray it is what I see every time I move my mouse over a different screen or menu. I do not know what to do t make this stop. I have searched high and low and can not seem to find out what I need to look for or even include in a post to help. Any suggestions would be great.

I have it dual booting on a Toshiba Laptop with Vista
AMD Turion 64 x2
4GB Kingston DDR2 RAM
500 GB WD, ATI Radeon X1200

9.04 does not support your graphics.....well not like previous flavors have.Meaning you won't have 3d,and maybe not all options for compiz will work. But 2d should work. Not linux's fault, but ATI's.Keep in mind ATI dropped support for Microsoft's Os's also.

As for the reinstall of 2.1 did you install the ATI driver yet?

As soon as I did the final reinstall I upgraded everything via the Update Manager, was something crazy like 108 different upgrades. A graphics driver pop up happen as well. This asked me to install the latest "NON" supported driver at my own risk to security. So I believe it is as up to date as it gets. And just to be sure, I have 2.1 Ultimate Edition 64bit installed now which from what I have been reading is based on the 8.10 Ubuntu/Kubuntu so the 9.04 not supporting isn' t an issue. That is why I went back to this version ATM. The problem is this flashing is happening with the 2.1 and, as far as I can tell, the latest video card drivers. :?:

I am at a loss for what to do. Should I just go back to 2.0 64bit, didn't have any issues then. Or should I just try the 2.1 at 32bit, I don't see how this would help :( Any other ideas or even just a helpful point to a place I can find the answer. I do not mind working it out but I fear I will never actually get to fully appreciate Linux because I cant get even the simplest things to work. After I get it working I want to get Warcraft III: Frozen Throne running on it as well and I see this being another disaster.
