Mazal,
If smuggly's instructions do not resolve your problems....

Could you give some more info about your network configuration?
1: Are you Wired or wireless?
2: Are you using DHCP for assigning IP addresses on your LAN?
3: You mentioned SAMBA, so your Network Server is running what version of Windows?
4: If your server is a Windows server, have you checked that machine to insure you have permission to access the Shares, and that the Shares are correct - that all you want to see on the LAN is actually still "shareable" under windows?
5: Are you getting any sort of an error message - such as something about the "permissions" or "unable to mount" some folder or drive?
6: You said you can ping the server - what is it's IP address and what is the IP of the system you are using to access that server?
7: Is the server part of a Domain or just a local "group" such as Windows' WORKGROUP or MSOFFICE?
8: What Router are you using - Linksys, D-link, or some other brand?

Just because you did not intentionally make any changes to your network config (not sure if you meant the net config for Ultimate Edition or for your Server), does not mean that something has not changed. You cannot see the shares if the machines are on different subnets - if your Ultimate Edition machine is on, say, 192.168.1.xxx, and your Win Server is on, say, 192.168.0.xxx, they are on different subnets and will have share problems.

A little more specific info will help us to understand your problems and possibly assist you in correcting them. Post back as much useful info about your network and it's configuration and I'll try to help. I'm not a big "network specialist", but I do have some experience with 'Nix and Windows networking on the same LAN, so I'll help if I can.

I don't have a /etc/smb.conf file

I think you got yourself a bingo there.

another thing, is to recheck your shared files, and ensure the share permissions are configured to your liking.

also, log into the router to ensure the dhcp client list is correct along with the assigned IPs

Hello, When all else fails, turnoff, unplug everything in the network, wait a few minutes and then restart everything and usually the network is working again. I can't even begin to tell you how many times this has worked for me and other people I know.

Mazal wrote:I found the problem why PLACES-NETWORK doesn't work. It's because of my other problem that I can't see any pc's om my lan with their host names. The moment I type smb://ipadress/share into the location bar all the shares immediately shows up. If I can get the hostnames problem fixed then PLACES-NETWORK will work.

Try to Login to the router, from there you can see the router settings and how many pc's are connected.

ex. - open firefox > type 192.168.1.1 (maybe for your # is different)

hope this helps ;)
