I've held off a long time on this.......

Because Ultimate just keeps getting bettter at automaticly handling the install directly at the time of clicking the link, but I need to install a tar.bz2 application, and it wants to open it with archive manager...why is that, and how do I install the app once the tar file is DLed?

tar.bz2 files ARE archives, which is why the system wants to treat them like archives.

You need to extract them to a temporary directory. Inside that directory, you look for a .bin or .sh file usually, and you run that. If you run it from the terminal, you would enter that directory, then issue the command "sudo ./filename.sh" or "sudo ./filename.bin" without the quotes ("filename" would be replaced by the actual name of the file.)

One thing that might make it easier for the novice would be to install App_runner (http://hacktolive.org/wiki/App_Runner) which is a script that allows you to run files like that from the right-click menu in Nautilus....

And look for the Readme or Install files in the archives too always,they might tell you how to install it. <BREW>

Thanks, for the replies!

However, as the screenshot shows...NO .sh or .bin........ :? I've read all the text files there, and no help.......Sorry for the double post....it's been awhile since I've attatched a screenie! :oops:

The second screenie shows trying to open with apprunner....the third, running as root - a little further along - but the terminal just constantly flashes, and I cant't select a HD and continue... it DOES show the continue button, as well, but not in the screenie, because of the constant flashing...........

synaptic installed it.......but now, I can't find/lauch the thing!!.............

SCRATCH that.......opened in terminal under gksudo........and it says photo rec needs 25 lines to operate, please enlarge the terminal........even AFTER, I go fullscreen with it......still getting that constant flashing.........

alt f2 photrec, and alt f2 testdisk both come back with nothing......no teminal no window or gui; nothing at all happens. please read prior post, as I edited it while you posted your last......
