Hello Hawks,
Are you saying that your screen has gone to Black and is no longer "viewable"? It's been a long time since I used ATI cards and drivers. Did you manually edit the file? If so, try using this command and then try re-installing the driver via System>Administration>Hardware Drivers. Command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Could you post a copy of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file? Maybe that will shed some light on the problem.

You might also want to see this link for the latest driver info and download for the ATI RAdeon 4000 Series card:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx?type=2.4.1&product=2.4.1.3.37&lang=English - for 64 bit OR 32 bit Linux OS... The latest driver I see there is ver 9.4. Be sure to read the Installer Instructions for any assistance with the installation.

Let me know if this helps...

Hawks,
I believe there are a couple of Admins or Mods here who use ATI cards. Maybe one of them could give you some helpful assistance. But, as an example, here is a copy of my xorg.conf (I use nVidia but the syntax should be the same, with ati or catalyst insteard of nvidia): (commented lines have been omitted for brevity). Did you follow the link Installer Instruictions? There is information about the driver and various install proceedures that may be helpful for your problem.

Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Configured Monitor"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Monitor "Configured Monitor"
Device "Configured Video Device"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

I'll try some research and see if I can find some references for a solution...

cell and Hawks,
I used to have an ATI Radeon All-In-Wonder 9800 (fan failed after 4 years), and I had very good results with that card. However, I found that nVidia was much better supported, and seemed to be much faster, more stable, and, most importantly, it's drivers are given pretty good support from nVidia, I now use a couple of eGeForce 8500GT 512MB cards and the nVidia GeForce 9800GT 1024MB card. I will never go back to ATI for any Unix/Linux system.
