Wellllllllllllllllllllllll..... ;) NAW, DON'T do the upgrade...backup your /home folder, sources.list, and whatever else you want to try and bring over, and do a fresh install with Jaunty (9.04)...and make sure during the partitioning sequence you select "Ext4"...you'll be pleasantly surprised by the increased speed of the "Ext4" format (ex: fsck when forced at bootup as it is every so often, only takes like 2 seconds!!!). Ext4 will read ext3 and below including NTFS/Fat32/etc..., but Ext3 etc...WILL NOT read Ext4, so DO take that into consideration...and YES, you can install what you backed up (Ext3 or whatever format) and it will install on Ext4...

This all may seem like extra work but there are 2 DISTINCT advantages: 1) You get the additional performance enhancement of the Ext4 format, & 2) with a fresh install, there won't be any errors that always emerges from an upgrade.

Hope this helps you in deciding...and whatever you decide, we're always here to help!!!

Good Luck!!

Hello, I have 3 computers I could try the update on, but I was waiting. Partially since I had a HD crash on one of them. I had a WD 500g Sata, bought at Staples with ext war. I had it 3 days, Ultimate Edition looking just like I wanted then on the 4th day, FSCK errors, the system tried to fix 'em, left me w/ trying manually, that didn't work, so I redid the whole thing over, worked good for about 3 days and again, disk errors on startup, the system fixed'em, so it said and finished booting, then about 3 days later all kinds of errors-some I never seen before, or had any idea of what they were! I reinstalled Ultimate Edition then I thought no way this has to stop and I took it out and went back to Staples. I asked about getting the Seagate instead of another WD. Said Seagate is working fine so far a week later. So anyway I am tired of issues at the moment.

No Doubt!! Never heard of a problem like that with ANY brand of HDD...would be interesting to know what WD found out about the drive as what was causing that kind of problem...

It would be interesting to find out what caused all those errors, but we will never know.

Just for the sake of doing so, ran an upgrade from UE2.1 to 9.04 and all seems well. Took quite a while to download files and complete (probably due to bandwidth issues I´d say), but nonetheless, no errors, no problems of any sort. This scares me. I always prefer a clean install myself, but thought I´d try an upgrade to see what its all about. Did absolutely nothing to prepare system, simply clicked on upgrade button and away she went.

Good Deal!! I tried that at first on one of my partitions...then tried the "convert ext3 to ext4" deal...THAT was a disaster...the Upgrade went fine for my system...too bad about the conversion tho'...so I just did a fresh install to Ext4 format and been in the "faster" lane ever since ;)

True enough, but there are also other advantages over 'apt' by using 'aptitude safe-upgrade' then 'aptitude dist-upgrade' (which has been replaced by 'aptitude full-upgrade' but aptitude still recognises 'dist-upgrade')...read 'man apt' and 'man aptitude' to get a better idea ;)
