The more reading I do the more I think buying ATI was a mistake ... just read that the newest release 9.04 doesn't
have support for ATI ... so I figure best find a better card to use with Linux . any recommendations?

I have never has a problem with Nvidia cards.

My card is 3 years old....and works really well. You don't have to spend a fortune.

Sorry for not being model specific, but I am at work and don't have access to the information.

Cheers

Hello, In my Sig I list the current nvidia card I am using in several systems with no problems. But I have also used with out any problems; FX 5200, FX 5500, e-GeForce 6200. I did have the Jaunty beta running with 3d effects with my current setup. I wouldn't expect you to have any problems with a newer Nvidia card.

Here, are some pages you might want to look at;

Easier to find nVidia support thru nVidia support site...go to download drivers and search for whatever card you're interested in and see if the Linux drivers are available for it (nearly all the cards are)...I haven't found any chipset (mine is nForce 430) drivers, but Ubuntu has always picked them it automaitcally anyway...
nVidia Support (drivers) site: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

BTW: the "autofind drivers" deal there doesn't work with Linux/Ubuntu/Ultimate Edition

Hey Cell , I read it in a post by Nathen:
I used to have a laptop with an ATI card--lets say I have no desire to use another ATI card again. I have a friend who also has a laptop with an ATI card that he did manage to get to work, he tried to install the new UBUNTU Jaunty and it doesn't support his card, so he can't have the FGLRX video driver. He had to go back to installing Intrepid again..So, you may possibly be in the same boat if you try to install UE2.2 or Jaunty on your laptop.

I'll just sell these ATI cards and go with Nvidia . I get a little caught up on the linux reading ... mixed it up with a report I had to do for work .... recommended they change their drivers :lol:

F@#k looks like my card is on that list......I might be going over to the debian side...If I cant get this hacked kernel I found to work with ubuntu...

points,
I am currently using a fairly inexpensive nVidia card the eGeForce 8500GT 512MB. I think I paid around $40.00 US at Frys for this card. All 3d effects work great with this card (see attached Screenshot). These cards were still on the shelves last week, April 19 thru 25, 2009.
