Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.1

ok, a silly question...

Postby Twisted » Tue Apr 28, 2009 2:35 am

typically when I utilize some sort of Nvidea based GPU and get everything sailing in nix an Nvidea splash appears during boot up, I am using my first ATI/AMD card with linux ever since the voodoo stuff...

the catalyst drivers are up and running, should there be an ATI splash or not?

on boot up the first sequence graphics is like funky, I get a kind of a faded off color (almost fluorescent) looking Ultimate Edition 2.1 logo then it goes on to another boot stage and loads a normal looking Ultimate Edition 2.1 logo then the desktop where all is fine? is this a normal boot up for an ATI graphics card?

sorry to take up space but I'm wondering what the norm is....

I use ATI for my desktop, and Nvidia in my laptop, never had a splash screen for the ATI/Nvidia on either. Long as it works, then it works .

Hello, I have installed U.E many times on a number of computers and I have seen some of what you experience. I also have seen the Nvidia splash screen on startup, but only with certain models of an Nvidia card. I don't think there is any place to enable or disable that splash screen, at least I can't find anything on the systems I am using now. Did you go to Start-up Manager and change anything? This is where you can select a start up "theme", on this machine I am using to write this, I hadn't gone to the S-U manager yet since I installed 2.1. Under the appearance tab my screen showed a blank, black selection box, at the Usplash option. When I clicked on it, I had some 5 options, since I had also installed several other themes; UBUNTU STUDIO, Snow-intrepid, debian, UBUNTU, KUBUNTU, Ultimate Edition 2.1, I then selected UE2.1, and then hit close. ON another computer I installed the Christmas theme last and it changed things to look kind of blurry, flourscent, not pretty at all, so I went into the SU Manager and clicked on the UE2.1 theme.

I used to have a laptop with an ATI card--lets say I have no desire to use another ATI card again. I have a friend who also has a laptop with an ATI card that he did manage to get to work, he tried to install the new UBUNTU Jaunty and it doesn't support his card, so he can't have the FGLRX video driver. He had to go back to installing Intrepid again..So, you may possibly be in the same boat if you try to install UE2.2 or Jaunty on your laptop.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf (as below, "False" will give you the logo):

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

yup, 2.1

fglrxinfo;

display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Radeon HD 3850 AGP
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (2.1.8087 Release)

Segmentation fault

I would like to try and install the latest Catalyst 9.4 from AMD, they claim I need 32 bit packages installed, do they mean the 32 bit fglrx packages? I should be able to synaptic those right?

is this a normal boot up for an ATI graphics card?

Yes and no...usually hard core ati users will tweak their xorg to fix "issues" like this. One example is>not many know this, but you can tweak xorg to play "really" nice with wine if your playing games...
