I broke it

Postby points » Sat Apr 25, 2009 12:55 pm

I was messing with some updates and screwed 2.1 ... won't boot into system ... so I figured no problem , I'll just reinstall ..then I remembered I had a few emails and address I should save if I can .. So here's my question.. In evolution setup it asks if you want to restore settings etc ( I;m doing this from Live DVD ) .. can anyone tell me where this folder is ... I have been snooping around .. but figure it's best to ask

Thanks gents ..lots of good info ... not sure I can get away with striders theme with teenagers in the house  , but I'm not too old to say I never inhaled <BREW> .. mmm
still remember this one trip to jamaica .... anyway .. I have been doing a bit more reading and I am leaning toward an ap called gag , I'll put it on the mbr and then create a small partition on the drive for the grub. My thoughts are to have 5- 200 gig partitions to give myself a few OS options to learn from and one I can leave a stock UU for the kids to get their home work done , any thoughts / recommendations?

looks like what I'm thinking about ...If what I understood about gag was right it would be gag in mbr and first part of HD ... then a small partition for grub ... then dif distros ,,, if I understood right .. setting it this way I could delete a distro (if/ when I fuc ed it up )
and still have the gag and grub for the other OS .... will gparted have the same features?

Forget gag, Grub will do it all for you...and you don't "delete" an OS, you reformat the partition and "erase" it. Then go into /boot/grub/menu.lst and edit it out. Grub installs in the MBR itself, no separate partition needed, unless you just want to create a '/boot' partition, but that's not needed either. Just let Grub do it's thing when it gets to that point in the LiveCD/DVD installation...

Thanks for responding saddle tramp , I did try to reformat from the live dvd , but it failed .. so that got me reading about other options to protect the boot area and still have options to make changes when I mess it up .... until I get to know more of what I'm doing , I need simple ... no real simple :D

You're welcome points....IMHO, the more you add to the boot process, the more complicated (and chances of something going wrong) it gets...Grub really isn't that hard, it just looks it...here's one ref that goes thru it pretty good...I have some more on bookmarked in one of the other Ultimate Edition's I'm running and will post those here as well...

Make sure the drive isn't mounted when you try to format with the live disk.
