Help & support for Ultimate Edition 2.1

Well, now I have a slight problem

Postby marty6 » Sun Apr 12, 2009 10:07 am

Hi,

I need some suggestions on how to fix the xorg.conf. I did a stupid thing and complied the nvidia 180.44 driver w/ the current kernel. OOOPS. Well, to say the least, I can't get into UU2.1 unless I use 'safe mode' in the grub and 'fix' the xorg file. But, this does not solve the problem. After rebooting and using the 177 driver that came with the 2.1 edition, I still can't get in. The libraries are gone for the keyboard etc... Would it be best to 'reload' the 2.1 edition? And two, how do you use the nvidia 180.44 drivers with this. There's probably a simple fix, but w/ my limited knowledge of linux, I would not know where to begin.

Any and all help is appreciated.

You may want to practice with the live disc first:
viewtopic.php?f=18&t=2955#p32611
In future back up your xorg.conf file. Sometimes Ubuntu creates one when you install a Nvidia graphics driver. Have a look and see if it did. It would be called xorg.conf old or something like that or backup. You can have a look using the live disc. I personally would re install and start again using the link I gave you. It is probably much faster.

Hi,

I was able to compile the nvidia driver and use it. Just found some directions on how to and it worked. My mistake was that during the process, I clicked 'yes' when downloading a file from nvidia and not saying 'no' to that part of the process. Now I have the 180.44 driver working!

But, I do have a new problem however. Trying to get sound to work in UU2.1 correctly. I have been trying to get a game to run through 'wine' and use 'skype' at the same time. But I am unable to do both. Is there a fix for this? Do I need to uninstall Pulseaudio in order to get this to work?

Any help is appreciated

In any case you can't get xorg to work, there's always a way to make it work in a basic "safe" mode, while in a command line, use the command
Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

and then you can restart the graphics
Code: Select all
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
