How to install Ultimate Edition 2.1 and set up internet/network connection

Postby azngujuonfire » Fri Apr 10, 2009 1:48 am

Hey guys, I just burned the Ultimate Edition 2.1 image onto DVD

I have a 500GB harddrive, w/ about 15GB free space... lol, and i also have a 100GB external HDD, w/ 2 partitions of 45 GB each... I want to install Ultimate Edition 2.1 on the external HDD. Now, how do i go about doing that? I have an HD4850, and when i restart computer, boot from the dvd, right after Ultimate Edition loads up to main home screen w/ the red oceany background, my GPU hits 80*C, and screen goes black and i have to turn off and just run windows. Im on Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit right now.

I have a Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R motherboard, and it had the Realtek 8168/8111B.
I went onto the Realtek website, and looked at the drivers under Linux... which one do i downloade for Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.1?

Here's the link:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dow ... RTL8111D(L)%3Cbr%3ERTL8168C/RTL8111DP

theres one for kernel 2.6.x and 2.4.x, one for just 2.4.x, then there are the FreeBSD and Unixware ones...

I am totally lost, and i need your help!!!
Thank you,

If you want to install Ultimate to your external hard drive, unplug your internal hard drive first(this is the safest way). Then when you want to change operating systems just go into the bios and boot from the appropriate hard drive. This way you won't alter your Windows MBR. When you install Ultimate after Windows it install grub boot loader which over rides the Windows master boot record. Keep in mind you must have the ability to boot to usb from your bios. If you can't boot from your usb then you might want to make a note of this link in case something horribly goes wrong: http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/ ... ith_ms-sys

try safe graphics mode, in order to even get it installed. it should be straightforward with the external drive deal. If the partitions you want don't show up, try unplugging your 500g internal. Finally, your network module is for wired ethernet, rite? ultimate edition should work on any wired internet connection. wireless is usually the only problem with it.

Hey guys, thank you for your replies.

Umm, when i disconnected my internal 500GB harddrive w/ all my windows stuff, and just had my external hdd and the livecd (DVD) with 2.1 on it, and i tried to install it, when it got to the disk partition step, it did not have anything there, but when i looked at the Computer folder, it had the external USB HDD recognized, just not in the installation. Any ideas on how to get it to recognize and partition?

Also, i do have a wired network card, with an ethernet cable going from my cable modem to my router, and to my network card, but even so, on the network icon at the top, it has the red "x" on it, and says network connection disconnected, when i hover the cursor over it, and has the network "auto eth0" with a black circle next to it. When i go to the edit connections option, it has the auto eth0 network, and across from it, it says "never" i guess that means it has "never" connected to it. I do not know what the problem is, and why it doesnt connect. I put the setting to "automatically connect" and select the automatic DHCP setting, but still nothing.

I searched around on google and stuff and found some commands to run in the terminal such as "ifconfig -a" and "infconfig eth0 up" and "dhcpcd eth0", but on some of the commands it says that permission denied or w/e.

So i guess before i can resolve the networking problems, i must first successfully install Ubuntu onto the external HDD, but to do that i need the livecd to recognize the external hdd, because when i disconnect the 500GB, it doesnt show the external usb HDD in the partition step of the installer, but does show it in the "Computer" folder.
I believe it is an issue of it being mounted, but when i try to unmount it in the computer folder, it gives me an error about it being locked or something.

Thank you

First off, Welcome to Ultimte Edition. :D

So... You are receiving permission denied messages from the term when issuing commands... That means you are running commands that require root access. To do this under Ubuntu and it's varients, you use the 'sudo' command. Just prepend 'sudo' before a command that requires admin perms. The system will ask for your password right after that and you just type it in... :)

what is the password lol? i have the live cd, so i do not believe it has been set up yet, so it should be the default password, which i do not know what it is.

and also, what commands should i enter into the terminal regarding my networking issues? anything that will help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

'Any ideas on how to get it to recognize and partition?'
You can create a folder in your Computer directory and then add an entry in your /etc/fstab file.
