E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

What can I do to fix this please.

...it tells you what to do...you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem....so open Terminal and do it...

I should have mentioned I tried to do as you suggested. I get the following error.

su: Authentication failure


I put in the correct password but keep getting the above.

Any further suggestions appreciated.

...use sudo...that'll get ya thru ;)

EDIT: Ok, most end up asking this anyway, so in short, logging in as 'root' is disabled by Ubuntu default. Reason, to protect users from themselves (yeah, I know, pissed me off too). So here ya go, just remember, you'll be working as 'Root' when you use 'su'...

sudo passwd root

then enter your user password you created when you installed then you will be asked for the ROOT password (2x), enter it here and you can log in as root.
