this the line on window that opens rachel@g-comp-1:~$

I'm wondering if trying to do this with the file on the desktop is the issue ..
should I create a folder for the driver somewhere else ?

Now right click somewhere in the terminal window.press enter.see second screenshot.

Not left click.
Did you make it an executable? My first pic should look like yours, except for the color and decorations.

If you get impatient you can use the repo driver, and try the ati driver later.Just make sure you uninstall the repo driver first.(I have better results from ati.but the repo driver worked well too.)

my daughter didn't like the dark gray in open office , so I changed the theme ... I'll have to change it back later and see if that is why the first page for executable is different .. you were right,I went back to square one ...
made it executable , installed , rebooted .. when I check third party drivers , still none installed .. there was a message in the install that if failed to load type in aticonfig-initial-f from the console ... more reading for me

It wont be listed under third party drivers. There are differences from the repo driver and the ati driver. But you went through the ati install right? If so that should be it.Your done ;) You should have ccc installed now to.Just like on an xp system. Now turn on the eye candy 8-) Remember if you watch movies and play games to turn it off.they don't play well with compiz ;)(movies and play games that is)

Oh yah install xbmc, and codecs through ultimatix. And if you can play some high def movies.Im curies to hear how it looks. If you cant see video then install the codecs with quickstart
