Hello all .. Well I bought three new systems ... put hexpee pro as backup , I've been doing a bit of reading and trying to decide which distro of linux to use .. right now it's a toss up between ubuntu 8.10 and ultimate 2.1 ,, I have both in the 64 bit versions. So I'm asking for a few opinions / direction before the install ,thanks in advance

Ultimate come with most of the software you will ever need. Ubuntu 8.10 is fairly minimal. It really depends on what you want. If you Install 8.10 you will need to add a lot more if you do a lot more. If you only use your computer for web surfing, playing music(the basics) then go with 8.10. If you do more go with Ultimate.

Hello, I have used both on several different computer systems. I like to do more than the basics that install with the 8.10 UBUNTU. So if you like to do many different things, using lots of programs and like more of the 3 D effects than I would highly recommend the Ultimate. I am using the Ultimate right now, and love it, it comes with little apps that help you get the more advanced settings installed (codecs, JAVA etc.) with little effort, so you can play DVDS. I like the burning flames compiz fusion effect when I close the windows, this doesn't install with the 8.10. I have tried a number of different linux distro's, none top the Ultimate! Install it and enjoy!

Thanks for the tips cell ... I found unetbootin , but not sure which distro to choose for the U/E 64 iso .. , I'm guessing I can also run partmagic from the usb ( still reading )
I loaded U/E live from the DVD , but had to use the video in safe mode to get it to work ,,, guess the ati 4650 is going to have issues

Get it loaded up first.ill post back on how i installed the ati drivers from the the web site.you can allways use the drivers from ubuntu also but i get better performance from ati.im not sure what you mean by "which distro to.......64...."I use Ultimate 2.1 64 bit

To use unetbootin you will have to have the Ultimate iso file saved somewhere.then point unetbootin to that file, and it will automatically make a boot usb drive.when that is done, then you might have to set your bios to boot from usb or press f12 to get a boot choice(when you restart your pc).then use the usb as a live session.

you can also install with the live cd.just burn the iso image(at a slow speed) .I suggested unitbootin as an alternative way to install.

edit: just thought of something.i cant find unitbootin on my 2.1 64 bit machine(maybe it didn't come with it?) so i downloaded a unitbootin 64 deb from here.
http://www.ubuntu-eee.com/wiki/index.ph ... n#Download

click on the saved file, let the package installer do the rest.then open unitbootin up.select diskimage, find your iso.select ok.that should do it.

I see from your picture how I should have done it ..before I saw this I just decided to load from the dvd ... went well , I had to fight the temptation to give the whole drive to Ultimate Edition ..
I ended up giving xp 145 gig to live on for now :) .. back to the reading ..
