Cant install or boot into liveCD

Postby Sleepy » Thu Mar 12, 2009 1:04 am

Hello all,

I have an older system and I cant seem to boot into the liveCD nor install it from windows OR the disc itself. If I install from the disc, the loading screen will pop on for about 3 minutes, then go into this.

Loading Please Wait...

BusyBox v1.10.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.10.2-1ubuntu6) Built-in Shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of commands.

And does nothing after that.

Am I doing something wrong? First time linux user, hoping to game and stuff on something not windows :D

ECS D6VAA dual socket 370
1 Pentium 3 933MHz
1.5 gig ram
Gefore 6200 AGP
maxtor HD 120gig

Thanks all.

Howdy Sleepy and Welcome to Ultimate Edition...
You're system specs look good for installing Ultimate Edition, so don't believe your problem is there...
It looks as if you may have a bad burn or download...make sure the checksums match (from the download site to the downloaded .ISO and the .ISO and DVD you burned it too. When burning the .ISO DVD, do a slow burn (i.e. not over 4x)...
Also, since it's a LiveDVD, if you can, see if it will load up in another system....this will for sure verify whether it's a bad burn/.ISO download or not. Let us know how all the above checks out and we'll assist you further if need be.

(To verify the checksums, you just run md5sum in a Terminal like this:

cd (to whatever directory you have the .ISO)
md5sum (name of .ISO)

That's all there is to it...

It looks like it doesn't like your video card. Put the live disc in and when you get to the kernel boot prompt hit escape. You now will press e to edit the kernel line by adding VGA=769 at the end and save it and press enter to boot. This should load the vesa driver so you will get a desktop. If that works post back and we will move on from there.

Ok,

It works in other computers so I dont think its a bad burn.

Could you explain in better detail on how to add that command? Still a noob at linux :D

Thanks you guys :D

It happens just after you boot. It will say grub and that's when you hit Esc. I can't take a screen shot because it is before your desktop starts. You have to be quick, You only have a few seconds before the kernel loads automatically. The commands are right on the screen and are self explanatory.

Ok now what should the whole command look like? I feel dumb asking stuff like this :?

Also is there any BIOS options I should change with that could conflict with the install?

Thanks you guys for all the replies. :D

All you do is press e(for edit) and add VGA=769 to the end of that long line of crap(the kernel line). Then save it and hit enter then b for boot. I wouldn't tinker with the bios just yet.

Ok,

I did get to finish the install in windows, but even still it didnt work. I did however added that VGA=769 command on the kernel line but still doing the same thing. I had another video card and installed it but it also did the same thing. Maybe its the board?

I dont know if this will be any beter but can you install a older version(if there is any big differences) and upgrade to the newer version?

Thanks you guys SOOOOO much for helping, Ill e-hug you all if we get it to work :D.

if you search the ubuntu forums for this error its common on "older"systems, when installing 8.10.has something to do with the kernel not loading the hard drive proper. It sees the drive, but fails at some point. I had it happen to me yesterday, but it was for a totally different reason.i have 2 drives, and i just forgot to put the jumpers in for master and slave.

the only way others found to install ubuntu that i seen was to install gusty.I dont know if any of the ultimate builds are based off gusty, but worth looking into.

'if you search the ubuntu forums for this error its common on "older"systems, when installing 8.10.has something to do with the kernel not loading the hard drive proper.'
I don't buy that at all. I had 2.1 installed on a 10 year old Dell with 512megs of p100 ram and an 4 year old 80 gig pata hard drive(it is a 600 mhz cpu). It ran fine. I don't know who came up with that nonsense. I had Ubuntu 8.10 installed on a 10 year old Maxtor 6 gig hard drive before it bit the dust.
If someone is getting busybox it is almost always a video issue.
