'I have wasted a bunch of DvD's on UE2.0- gamers version, all to no avail.'
All the more reason to invest in some dvd rw discs. I gave up on burning drink coasters since I gave up drinking a few years ago!!!
'I have no idea what was causing the write problem with the internal drive.'
Linux is a lot more sensitive to faulty hardware than Windows. The average life of an optical drive is one year and that depends on how much you use it. I only have one just in case I need to rip a dvd or watch a rented dvd. Other than that I don't see much use for them anymore with large usb flash drives so cheap now.

re-checked the checksum each time, burnt slowly - always some error, when using the disk.
:(

Got both UE2.0 & 2.1 working though :D

I have 10 DVD+RW I use for burning iso files on, and it's even easier here than in windows because I don't have to erase them before reuse. K3B just write over and it have worked so far. :)

I am using DvD-r . so, just is the difference with +rw?.
ie: can these be used if the disk is *not* finalised?.
does the PC still boot the disk ok?.
& can the disk still be 'erased' with K3b after ...

the r = "write" and the rw="re-write" pretty much you can use a rw over and over again.

as far as i know you HAVE TO finalise the dvd in order to boot from it.Other wise it stays open to record more info ;) I see few of people having a hard writing to a dvd with brasero, and k3b.i think i read somewhere that
theses progs have a hard time dealing with writing anything over a certain amount of info.Maybe its over a gig?i didnt have trouble until i started to write the ultimate os's(over a gig).i NEVER HAD TROUBLE USING THE DEFAULT CD/DVD WRITER.Sure its not a pretty, and don't have all the cool clicky tabs, but simplicity has its advantages <BREW> I think someone should (and im not volunteering, least not yet)should gather all the trouble post's and make a newbie sticky with em.should be easy,i only see two or three main problems that pop up>dvd burning and the updating.

edit:sorry just realized this was a partial rant and rave

I use Nero to burn discs with. I have used it for years. You hardly ever get a bad burn and only if the disc is bad or the image is corrupt. And I burn at full speed!!!

I used http://www.burn4free.com/ to burn CD and DVD's when I ran windows. Never had a bad burn unless the disc was too cheap (no name) - bought once a 100 piece pack of DVD's on the net for 220 Dkr (38$) just to learn that they only can be used for music or films - burned the same iso four times with errors every time, then bought the quality DVD+RW and haven't had a bad burn since. :)

I bought a 100 pack spindle for 5 bucks at a place going out of business. I'm 50 for 50 on good burns. The only thing is with the cheap ones is that they scratch easily.
