sound issues??

i have just installed 2.1 on a friends laptop, medion akoya. 25ogig hdd, 2gig ram ddr2 1.9 trurion 64x2 chip. all went ok as far as the install was concerned, however when we tried to play music and dvds it failed to work. we are now installing 2.0 in the hopes that it will work. what can be one please?

How did you get sound to work on another machine? How did you play dvds on your machine?
If you already installed all the codecs(including libdvdcss2 for dvd playback) played with the sound settings and no joy you need to go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and get the sound chip #. It will look something like this: AL883 or CS4236 etc. When you find it, post back and we will proceed from there.

Try this from terminal:
sudo modprobe snd-SB600
or IXP SB600

If the module is in the kernel, it will work. If it does work just add snd-sound card # to his /etc/modules file and it will load up when he re-boots. If it doesn't work try a different kernel.
p.s. A computer is useless as far as I'm concerned without sound. Got to have my tunes while I surfing!!!

i searched for the /etc/modules folder but cant find it. we found other details for the sound as previous post did not work here goes for extra info. amd radion x1200 series audio controller, revision a1 type hd audio version 1:00. the codec found is amd 791ah revision a1 version 1:00 audio channels 2. not sure if this is helpfull. thanks

What do you mean you can't find it?
Did you google for that motherboard(or sound chip #) and intrepid to see if there is compatibility with that sound chip and Linux?
